Geography and Climate
Singapore is a small island country in Southeast Asia. The island lies at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula near the South China Sea. Singapore consists of a large island and 58 smaller islands. The large island, called Singapore, covers almost 250 square miles. The other islands have a total area of about 20 square miles. About half of the islands are uninhabited. Singapore has a hot and humid climate. The average temperature is about 80 degrees. But sea breezes make the country cooler, so the temperature never rises above 94 degrees. The biggest island receives about 95 inches of rainfall every year. There are also a lot of monsoons, that's why Singapore's wet season is so long. When the monsoons stop the thunderstorms begin.

People and Culture
Singapore is one of the world's most densely populated countries. Most people in Singapore's people are Chinese. Malays also live in Singapore and make up 15% of the population. The rest of the people are Indians. Many foreign people also live in Singapore. Since Singapore is such a diverse country they have four official languages: Mandarin Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil.
Singapore does not have an official religion. But the main religions practice are Buddhism, Islam Christianity, Taoism, and Hinduism. Since most people are Chinese Buddhism is the most practiced. The people of Singapore view festivals of the country's religious and ethnic groups as public holidays.
Singapore offers a variety of Chinese, Indian, and Malay dishes. American fast food is also available. The fancy restaurants also serve a mix of international food such as Mexican, Thai and Vietnamese. Singapore has a lot of art, music and theater from all the ethnic groups. Events include Chinese operas, Indian dancing, and Malay dramas.

Government and Citizenship
Singapore is a republic.The Parliament makes the country's laws. The prime minister leads a group of people called a Cabinet. They carry out the operations of the government. The Parliament consists of 84 elected members, 9 nominated members selected by the Parliament and 3 appointed members called NCMP's. The members of Parliament serve five-year terms.
The people of Singapore choose the elected members of Parliament. Citizens over the age of 21 have to vote. The head of the political party with the most seats in Parliament serves as the prime minister of the country. The prime minister selects the members of the Cabinet. The people elect a president for a six-year term. The president serves as head of state of Singapore. The president appoints the prime minister. The president also has some control over government finances and makes some civil service appointments.

Singapore has many banks, insurance firms, and finance companies. They also have stock exchange. Tourism is also important to the economy of Singapore.
There is little unemployment in Singapore. The country's annual income per person is one of the highest in Asia. The government of Singapore plays a major role in the country's economy. The government decides what benefits such as vacation time and sick leave is provided for workers. It also operates an employment agency to help people find jobs, and it provides pensions for retired workers.
