Knights in the Know
February 2, 2018
Noble Knights
This week's Noble Knights are both 5th graders. These students exhibit the character trait of leadership. Help us in congratulating them both!
Avery Quilty shows leadership every day in so many ways. She is organized and dependable. In fact, those are her top 2 strengths. Avery can be counted on to do the right thing whether you are watching her or not. She is a great example for other students. You always know she is going to do her best and never give up. She has a positive attitude, is fun to be around and is an encourager to others. She is not afraid to do the right thing, even when others around her may not be. Thank you, Avery, for being such a strong, positive leader!
Lane Decker exhibits leadership in many ways! He leads by example with his behavior by making responsible choices! When working with others, he is constantly encouraging his peers to stay on task and push through adversity. And finally, his positive attitude influences others in the classroom and at recess! Lane's teachers are very proud of the leader he has become, and are grateful for his leadership in our classrooms!
The 100th Day of School
Student Spotlight ~ Sophie Strain
Way to go, Sophie!!!
Learning in Kindergarten
STEM ~ Given the background knowledge that helicopters need to land slowly in order to be safe, students experimented to see which rotor blades landed the slowest: long and skinny blades, or shorter, wider blades. What do you think they discovered?
Math ~ Kindergarteners have been learning about measuring length using non-standard measures. For example, how many unifix cubes long is a book, a box, or a bottle of glue? Students know to measure from end to end (as opposed to starting in the middle).
Air Blasters ~ Students made air blasters in STEM. The challenge was to build a launcher that would make a pom pom fly using only air.
Stem Towers ~ Students created STEM Towers and had 5 different challenges.
- Monday: the tallest tower
- Tuesday: the tallest tower that can support a weight on top
- Wednesday: the tallest tower that can withstand an earthquake
- Thursday: the tallest tower that can withstand a wind storm
- Friday: the tallest tower that can withstand a hail storm
Through this, students learned to work together, made plans, discussed ideas with others, compromised, revised and improved their plans, worked on persistence, and learned (through the STEM process) that their tower needs to be built on a smooth surface with a sturdy base. Students also learned that they could make their towers in different shapes which were more helpful for some of the challenges.
Writing ~ Kindergarten writing is not easy! They need to remember spaces between words, how the letters are formed, and write the sounds you hear in a word.
Shadows ~ Groundhog Day means we learn about shadows. Students learned that when the light is low, the shadow is long and when the light is more overhead, the shadow is shorter. Can you find your shadow? What does it tell you about the location of the light source?
