LANGUAGE ARTS
Language Arts Update:
Students are researching both sides of the debatable topic, “Should we continue to celebrate Columbus Day?”
Students read about 8 early explorers and learned about the interactions between these early explorers and the Native Americans.
After further researching about Columbus and the impact of his explorations, students will form an opinion about celebrating him with a holiday.
Students will learn how to develop a thesis statement and support that thesis with 3 reason paragraphs while writing a 5 paragraph essay.
MATH
Focus Standards:
5.NF.A.1- Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers).
5.NF.A.2- Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions.
5.MD.B.2- Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES
Science Update:
Students have been reading about early explorers from Spain, France and England.
The explorers claimed new land, looked for riches and all had an impact on the Native Americans and the New World.
After completing a note-taking grid, student compared the explorers looking for similarities and differences.
