SCHOOL NUTRITION NEWSLETTER

message from the director

One of the most important aspects of our jobs is that we are committed to our student customers. Often, we develop menus without first considering the wants and needs of customers. What may sound delicious to us, may not be something a student wants. Maybe we are setting up the serving line according to what's easiest for us rather than how it looks to our customers or how it affects quality. The three essentials our customers want from us are:

1. Listen

2. Deliver

3. Adapt

We recently sampled a stuffed sandwich at our Leadership meeting. No one was a fan and thought there was a funny herb aftertaste. After the meeting, we had students sample the sandwiches and they said they were great. Now that we listened, we need to deliver and get it on the menu. The next step is to pay attention to how the product is launched (marketing and communication) and then adapt to the participation results. High participation would indicate students were willing to try it. If participation falls the next time it's offered, perhaps quality, either cooking or holding time, needs to improve. By making sure we follow these three rules, we keep from falling into a rut where our customers are just an afterthought.

With gratitude,

Kathy

Congrats Amber Cruz!

Shout out to Amber for a highly successful event promoting National Play Basketball Day. The Valparaiso University's Women's Basketball team was on hand to interact with students. VHS coaches donated shirts and jerseys to give away and our very own Rachael Danyi was brave enough to be Victor Viking. Great job for the high level coordination and community involvement, it was an amazing day! Below is L-R John Croyle, VU Head Basketball Coach Mary Evans, Amber Cruz, Cafe Manager, and Dominique Duck, VU Assistant Coach.
