Cape's Mission & Vision
Vision: We believe that the most promising strategy for achieving the mission of Cape Elementary is to develop our capacity to function as a professional learning community.
Dear Cape Families,
During the month of November, we are reminded of all the things for which we are thankful each day. Our Cape families are at the top of our list! We hope you take time to reflect on all the wonderful joys you have in your lives. We are very thankful and privileged to work with students at Cape Elementary. Each one of them is our joy!
Our Trunk or Treat event was huge success. We had over 800 people attend along with 25 trunks and over 20,000 pieces of candy donated. Once again, our Cape families’ donations and support created a special evening for our students.
On Friday, November 8 at 8:15 a.m. we will thank and honor our veterans in a very special ceremony at Cape Elementary. We would like to invite any veterans in our community to attend. Please share the date and time with any veteran you may know or call the school with the veteran’s information, and we can mail an invitation.
As we prepare to take a week-long break from school for Thanksgiving, we want to express our gratitude for everyone who makes it possible for many of our students to come to school on time and ready to learn every day. We thank the following:
- Our students and families for making daily attendance a priority since they know the habit of attendance will promote success in the classroom and eventually in a job.
- Our wonderful teachers who pour their energy into making each classroom an exciting place for exploration and knowledge so children do not want to miss learning.
- Our support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.
We appreciate each one of you so much. We look forward to seeing you Friday, November 15 for Movie Night. We especially appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking extra days off during the Thanksgiving and Winter holidays. Just a few missed days here and there, even if they are excused absences, add up to lost learning time and leave your child behind in school.
We are honored and privileged to be part of the Cape family. Happy Thanksgiving!
Sincerely,
Ms. Osterholm and Mrs. Sund

Attendance Matters....Did You Know?
Students who are displaced in their housing have a higher rate of chronic absences than students who are not displaced in their housing.
Displacement in housing is identified as:
MCKINNEY-VENTO DEFINITION OF HOMELESS 42 U.S.C. § 11434a(2) The term “homeless children and youth”— A. means individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence…; and B. includes — i. children and youths who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations; are living in emergency or transitional shelters; or are abandoned in hospitals; ii. children and youths who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings…; iii. children and youths who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and iv. migratory children…who qualify as homeless for the purposes of this subtitle because the children are living in circumstances described in clauses (i) through (iii)
Please contact your Cape Elementary School Social Worker if you need help due housing insecurity as defined under Mckinney-Vento.
November Counseling Corner
Thank you to our students, parents and school personnel for supporting National Bullying Prevention Month in October!
Students were involved in activities including: Wearing blue on October 7 to show support for World Day of Bullying Prevention; watching Public Service Announcements, videos and tips on the news each morning; signing an anti-bullying pledge and banner and wearing orange for National Unity Day on Oct. 23. Each classroom was given supplies for a “We Are United” classroom project where students traced their hands and linked hands together as a symbol of unity. Classrooms were also given supplies for a school-wide “This Is Me” project where students were asked to decorate a paper “person” to represent themselves wearing an anti-bullying message. Every class participated in lesson one of a three-part series designed to provide answers to three questions pertaining to bullying: What is bullying? Who does bullying affect, and what can I do about it? Parts two and three will be available for teachers to access on-line at their convenience to show in their classrooms.
If you have questions pertaining to Cape Elementary School’s procedures for handling suspected bullying or harassment, please feel free to contact Miss Boeck, Certified School Counselor, or Mrs. Sund, Assistant Principal.
Our first Positive Behavior Interventions & Support school-wide SOAR celebration was a student favorite. Of the 681 students enrolled at Cape Elementary, 610 students were eligible to attend the Q1 “Game Guys/Bounce Houses” celebration! That is 90% attendance!!!! Please continue to encourage your student to follow our SOAR expectations as we gear up for Seymour’s Game Day at the end of Quarter 2 (right before Winter Break).
The district-wide character word for November is CITIZENSHIP/PATRIOTISM. This involves the quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community. The district’s quote for the month is, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.” Please join with us in November in promoting citizenship and patriotism to build these character traits in our future leaders here at Cape Elementary School.
