Required Career Focused Activities
A note from Mrs. Stout
Beginning this school year, the State of Michigan has raised the expectations for career exposure and readiness for all Michigan Students. What that looks like is a level of "exposure" for students grades K-5, "exploration" for grades 6-8, and "readiness" for grades 9-12. To that end, we are working to provide tools and opportunities for our students to meet this requirement.
Please read on for your grade level tools and experiences for your student. Thank you, as always, for taking the time to stay informed!
K-5th grade
For very young students, we are asking families to do an independent "field trip" - take a couple of hours and explore your own town or neighborhood. With adult guidance, interview trusted adults about their jobs. Here are some sample questions that a young student might ask:
1. What is your job?
2. How long have you worked here?
3. What is your favorite part?
4. What is your least favorite part?
5. When you were my age, what did you want to be?
ANOTHER option for students grades 3-5 is to come to Sylvester Elementary on __________________ to experience their career day focus. Junior Achievement will be in the building along with careers that revolve around "wheels" - think of any job that would involve a lot of driving. Students will hear from workers and be able to explore the different vehicles.
Take a picture on your cell phone of your student participating in the experience and fill in the following form. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSejyVtKBEd52H-Qocsph08_I_Oy6o5TrzX7SCUVYj_LICRL6A/viewform
6th - 8th grade
We have 2 requirements for Middle School Students.
1. Career Day is happening on March 25 in the morning. Students have been sent an email form to complete indicating what jobs they would like to hear about. They need to complete this form and plan to attend school in the morning on the 25th.
2. XELLO. Students have been given a login to xello.world. Each student has tailored activities specific to their grade to complete before the end of the school year.
9th - 12th grade
Online work:
Each student has been given a xello.world login and must complete the activities and lessons as assigned. Each grade level has specific activities which increase in complexity throughout high school. By their senior year, they will have completed a resume, explored career options and/or colleges, and defined short and long term goals. All students must keep xello up to date each year.
Hands-on experiences
9th grade students attended a career fair at Lake Michigan College in the Fall. This will be an annual activity.
10th grade students must complete a 1/2 day job shadow
11th grade students must complete a 1/2 day job shadow (CTE students exempt)
12th grade students must complete 2 full day job shadows - part of senior project. (CTE students exempt)
9th - 12th grade students must submit a REFLECTION FORM as evidence of participating in the hands on experience.
