A Message from the Principal
SPHS Parents,
We know that there have been questions and some confusion about attendance and deadline expectations. This document will address these expectations for all students; in-person, remote, and full-time virtual. School is in session, every day, 8:15 AM-3:35 PM. Students are expected to be working on school assignments during these hours, every day of the week. We believe this provides a sense of normalcy, structure, and accountability. The following items should provide clarification:
- SPHS is following normal procedures for attendance, assignment completion, make-up work, etc. for all students, including in-person/remote/virtual students.
- Important attendance information can be found HERE.
- THIS schedule should be followed daily for all students (in-person and students working remotely from home and virtual students). This schedule DOES include Wednesday each week as well - Wednesday is NOT an “off day.”
- Students may or may not have required Google Meets on their virtual/remote days, but all students need to be working on the schedule (for example, 8:15-9:05 each day is for 1st period, regardless of whether you are in person or working remotely).
- If you have a question about a specific class, please contact your teacher directly.
- If an in-person student is not at school on a planned in-person day, the student’s attendance will reflect an unexcused absence. A note must be submitted within three (3) school days of the absence to sphsattendance@hoover.k12.al.us. More information about attendance procedures can be found HERE in the HCS Code of Conduct on pages 62-65.
- If a student working remotely from home (including virtual students) cannot meet assignment deadlines due to sickness, out of town, etc., an unexcused absence will be entered into the student’s attendance. A note must be submitted within three school days of the absence to sphsattendance@hoover.k12.al.us.
- As normal, if a student does not attend class, and the absence is unexcused, the teacher will enter a “0” for that assignment.
- Students will not be able to receive credit for these assignments unless we receive a valid excuse, or the student attends Saturday School to recover the grade.
- Students are allowed a maximum of 9 parent-notes for excused absences for the school year. These reasons must be HCS Code of Conduct approved (reasons listed on page 62).
- If the reason for the absence is unexcused based on the HCS Code of Conduct (i.e., out of town, wedding, vacation, etc.), a pre-arranged absence form can be found HERE. Pre-arranged absences count in these parent-note numbers. These must be approved by administration before the absence occurs.
- Saturday School will be utilized as usual to help with grade recovery situations for students who have unexcused absences in INOW.
I apologize for sending two newsletters this week, but I felt like the information contained in each deserved your undivided attention. Hopefully, next Friday’s newsletter will be focused more on school activities, events, and information that highlights our students.
Thank you for your patience and your support as we work through these first four weeks of school. As always, please contact me should you have any concerns or questions.
Sincerely,
Peter L. Giangrosso
