PLANO - Today, the Office of State Representative Jeff Leach will begin accepting applications for Class 2 of the House District 67 Student Leadership Advisory Council.
Launched by Representative Leach in 2014, the Student Leadership Advisory Council (SLAC) is designed to provide a unique opportunity for high school students within House District 67 to engage in the legislative process with Representative Leach and his staff and to obtain a hands-on education of the role and inner-workings of Texas state government.
"The primary objective of the Student Leadership Advisory Council is to educate, encourage and inspire our next generation of Texas leaders by providing them with a venue to learn the intrinsic value of public service," stated Leach. "It is my hope that through this program, these bright young leaders will leave with a more thorough understanding of the nuts and bolts of the Texas Legislature and the significance of civic engagement."
Representative Leach's office is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in grades 9-12 in public, private or homeschool and must reside in District 67. Students will be selected by the Student Leadership Advisory Council Selections Committee, which is comprised of various community leaders within House District 67. Applications are due September 29, 2015 and final selections will be announced on October 7, 2015. Students selected to participate in the Student Leadership Advisory Council will be required to attend three meetings throughout the 2015-2016 school year. Meetings will be led by Representative Leach and his staff as well as other elected officials, covering various topics including the significance of community involvement, the role and functions of state government and the overall legislative process.
