Applying to Colleges

NEW! College Application Day, October 21st, in Counseling & Advisement!

GREAT reasons to attend College Application Day:

  • College applications can be completed with the help of school counselors and college admission representatives!

  • When? Tuesday, October 27, 2015 from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm

  • Where? Lexington High School Cafeteria, 2463 Augusta Highway, Lexington, SC 29072

Seniors are given TWO excused absences for College Days. In order to have the absences excused, it will be necessary to turn in a note on college letterhead with the student's name and date of the visit. This should be turned in to Mrs. Martin in Attendance.

In Order to Be Considered Eligible for a Nomination, A Candidate Must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of South Carolina
  • Be between the ages of 17 and 25
  • Not be pregnant or have a legal obligation to support dependants
  • Be prepared to complete a minimum of 5 years of service upon graduation
  • Meet the academic, physical, and character-based requirements set forth by the academy
  • Complete the application requirements of the academy/academies to which the candidate is applying

CSS/Financial Aid Profile – Student Guide

Using PROFILE, college financial aid administrators can develop a more accurate, economically sound assessment of a family’s ability to contribute to college costs & thus award their private (nonfederal) student aid funds more equitably. Gates Millennium Scholarship

Offers full tuition to any US accredited college or university. Student must be a US Citizen or legal resident with a 3.3 GPA (unweighted) is required, and a financial need must be demonstrated (must be eligible for a Pell Grant). Application deadline is January 13, 2016. www.gmsp.org

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Programs

This scholarship program provides financial assistance to students throughout the nation who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Criteria include commitment to pursue a bachelor’s degree and US citizenship. Application deadline is October 25, 2015 www.horatioalger.com/scholarships

National College Funding Services Scholarship

The amount of the Scholarship is $500 for participating high schools within Lexington Once School District for a 2015-2016 graduating senior. In order to qualify for the scholarship an individual must complete the official scholarship form. The winner from each school must attend an accredited college, university or technical school to validate the scholarship. The scholarship is a random drawing by April 1st or before Awards Night. Official scholarship forms are available in Counseling & Advisement.

NHA Scholarship Fund

This scholarship an individual must be a prospective or current high school graduate and the natural, step, or adopted son, daughter or grandchild, or a spouse, of a current or former Navy, USMC or Coast Guard rotary wing aviator or air crewman. Also eligible are individuals, their spouses, or children of individuals who are serving or have served in maintenance or support billets in rotary wing squadrons and Wings. http://www.nhascholarshipfund.org

S.C. Teaching Fellows Program

Up to $24,000 in scholarship money is available to students who are serious about entering the teaching profession in SC. There are no GPA or ACT/SAT score requirements for eligibility. Any high school senior who is a US citizen and SC resident can apply. Initial scoring is based on a combination of scholastic information, community and school activities, and references. Students must attend a Teaching Fellows Institution. The application deadline is December 1, 2015. www.cerra.org/teachingFellows

Spartanburg Methodist College Scholars Program

A full tuition financial package is offered to seniors who graduate with a 3.0 grade point average. In addition, students can also qualify for "Open House Scholarships" of $500 when they visit campus on an Open House Day.

SunTrust Off To College Scholarship Sweepstakes

High school seniors can win a $1,000 scholarship for their first year of college or private career school. One winner will be chosen at random every two weeks from September 14, 2015 until May, 2016. www.offtocollege.info

TEACH Grants - new program for future teachers

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grants (TEACH) will be available at some colleges and universities beginning this academic year. Students considering a career in education should check with the financial aid office at the college or university they plan to attend to determine the program’s availability and if they qualify. http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/TEACH.jsp

U.S. Army

There are scholarship opportunities such as merit-based, full-tuition scholarships, an annual stipend of up to $5,000 to cover living expenses, plus additional allowances for books and fees. http://www.goarmy.com/rotc/scholarships.html

New! South Carolina High School Writing Contest

Submissions for the third annual South Carolina High School Writing Contest are now being accepted. The contest is open to South Carolina high school juniors and seniors.

  • Cash Awards: $1000, $500, $250
  • The topic is “How should we improve the state of South Carolina?” Students can respond in any genre (fiction, drama, poetry, essay) in 750 words or less.
  • Deadline is Monday, November 2nd. Judge is New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe. Cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250 will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners. The entries of finalists and winners will be published in a young writers anthology by the University of South Carolina Press.
