Neon
By Emma Partin
The symbol of neon is Ne. Its atomic number is 10, and its mass number is 20.179. It is in period 2 and group number 18. It is part of the noble gases, the least reactive group of elements. It is a gas and a nonmetal.
Advertising Signs
In 1923, Georges Claude and his French company Claude Neon introduced neon gas signs to the United States by selling two to a Packard car dealership in Los Angeles. Earle C. Anthony purchased the two signs reading "Packard" for $1,250 apiece. Neonlighting quickly became a popular fixture in outdoor advertising.
High Voltage Indicators
The High Voltage indicator is a digital HV potential indicator, used to indicate the presence of voltage or make voltage measurements on earthed neutral systems up to 15kV. It uses neon to provide these services.
Liquidified Neon
Cryogenics involves refrigeration at temperatures below 120 K (-153°C). These low temperatures, which are not natural on earth, make it possible to liquefy gases such as methane, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen.
