Internal Use of Lemon Essential Oil

Ayurvedic tradition says to drink warm water with the juice from half a lemon first thing in the morning to stimulate the liver and promote bile flow, which aids digestion and help balance the body’s pH.

Note: Drinking lemon juice in your water, can put you at risk for tooth enamel erosion, a condition where the thin, protective layer of enamel slowly wears away from your teeth.

Lemon juice contains acid, which irritates gums and softens tooth enamel, leaving your teeth vulnerable to sensitivity and tooth decay. In fact, enamel erosion is one of the most common causes of cavities and tooth loss.

Lemon OIL does not contain citric acid and is safe for tooth enamel. It is more potent than lemon juice and the oil is absorbed into the liver easier than the juice, making for a better detox regimen. It has been shown to activate enzymes in the liver that are part of the detoxification processes which take toxic compounds present in the liver and convert them to non-harmful or less harmful versions. These “toxins” can range from caffeine to ibuprofen.

Using Lemon Essential Oil in the Home

1. Make a powerful natural cleaner. In a spray bottle, mix equal parts white vinegar with water. Add in 5 drops of lemon oil and shake well. Use this mixture to clean all your countertops, sinks, and so on. It will kill germs and leave a pleasant fresh smell behind. You may want to store this mixture in a glass spray bottle as the lemon oil can eat away at the plastic over time.

2. Add a drop to your dishwasher for spot-free dishes. You can add lemon oil to hand-washed dishes for the same effect, too.

3. Freshen your laundry by adding a few drops to homemade laundry soap to give it a pleasant scent, or add a drop directly to the wash/rinse cycle to freshen up any load. Lemon oil will also take away the musty smell of a load of laundry that’s been left too long in the washer.

4. Use lemon oil as a degreaser. It will cut through the muck and grime with ease. It will also help do away with residue from glues and adhesives

5. Add a few drops of lemon oil to a half-cup of olive oil to make a nice natural furniture polish for wood furniture. Again, apply a small spot-test first

6. Add a drop of lemon oil to your toothbrush about once a week. Your mouth will feel fresher and your toothbrush will remain germ-free.

7. Rub a few drops of lemon oil on cutting boards and other kitchen surfaces to disinfect and sanitize.

8. To kill germs, soak kitchen cloths and household rags overnight in a bowl of water with a drop or two of lemon oil.

9. A drop or two will remove odors. For example, you can put lemon oil on a cotton ball and stuff into stinky shoes or add a few drops to a diaper pail.

10. Use 1-2 drops of Lemon essential oil to remove gum, oil, grease spots or crayon.

11. Rub a drop of Lemon essential oil on your hands after using a public bathroom.

12. Use a paper towel soaked with several drops of Lemon essential oil to sanitize bathroom fixtures and toilet seats.

13. Rub a drop of Lemon essential oil to clean a butcher's block or other cutting surfaces.

14. Put 10-15 drops of Lemon essential oil in each gallon of carpet cleaning solution to help pull out stains and brighten the rug. This also leaves a fresh smell in the room.

16. Clean the dry erase board with a few drops of Lemon Oil on a rag or paper towel – Will even remove permanent markers!

17. Add Lemon oil to a spray bottle of water to clean and disinfect tables, countertops, and other surfaces. Lemon oil also makes a great furniture polish; simply add a few drops to olive oil to clean, protect, and shine wood finishes.

18. Prolong Shelf-Life of Fresh Produce: Fill a bowl with cold water, add 2–3 drops of Lemon oil. Drop cleaned fruit into the water, coating all surfaces. This will extend the shelf life of fresh produce.

19. Keep cut apples and avocado fresh: Use lemon oil in water to keep sliced apples or avocado from turning brown.

20. De-Smudge Your Stainless. You don’t need to hunt down that “single use” stainless steel cleaner anymore. Multi-use lemon oil is great for cleaning stainless steel appliances. You’ll love the way stainless looks and smells!

21. Clean Granite or Porous Stone. What is living in the pores of your natural stone counters or floors? Lemon oil cleans deeply, seeps into stone and leaves you with a “real fresh lemons” aroma, rather than that fake lemon chemical smell.

An Important Message about Quality!

Not all oils are created equal.

Because of a lack of industry standards and a lack of regulation for terms such as "natural" or "pure", much of what you find at the drug store is NOT a therapeutic grade essential oil and may lack real quality or even contain contaminants or adulterants (way more common than you'd think).

A LOT goes into creating a high quality essential oil.

A good brand should follow these guidelines:

  • Proper plant varieties - check the preferred Latin Name
  • Each plant grown indigenously for the healthiest plant
  • Grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides, etc.
  • Harvested with precise timing to ensure peak properties
  • Extracted with proper temp and pressure to preserve oil molecules
  • Third-party testing of every batch
  • The company stands behind the internal use of their oils

I always say, "If it is not pure enough to swallow, do you want to put it on your body?

The largest organ of your body is your skin; anything applied to your skin is absorbed into your body. If a bottle of essential oil says “external use only”, do you really want that in your body through absorption? Oils are absorbed into your system aromatically too, from inhalation; another reason to use only the purest oils you can find!

About me...

Hi! My name is Pamela Swamy and in August of 2015, it will be 2 years since I was first introduced to essential oils.

As a registered nurse, I was initially highly skeptical of essential oils but over time have personally experienced amazing responses from using them. Essential oils can be used for so much more than their fragrance and there are many online resources where you can find more information. Some of that information I will be sharing here.

It is important to note that before using any essential oils, you want to know for sure they are safe and pure enough to be taken internally. There are NO regulatory standards and the labels don't always state what is actually inside the bottles.

If you want more help in knowing how to determine if oils you want to try are safe and pure, please contact me by email or phone.
