Did you know that school buses deliver free meal bags, Monday through Friday, to areas close to your house? Charles County Public Schools data shows you have a child at Milton M. Somers Middle School. Meals are free for any Charles County child ages 2 to 18.

The closest mobile meal stop to your home may include Phoenix Run Apartments from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Phoenix Run Apartments are located at 720 Caroline Drive, La Plata, MD 20646. The bus will stop on the shoulder of Caroline Drive near Caroline Jones Park.

At mobile meal sites, children can pick up meals, or adults with a student ID, report card or birth certificate can pick up meal bags without a child present.

Milton M. Somers Middle School is a curbside meal distribution site. Meals are provided curbside at the school Monday through Friday from 7 to 8 a.m., and 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Adults must pick up meals at curbside meal sites and provide a student ID, report card or birth certificate if the child is not present at pick up.

Menu items, other mobile meal delivery locations, and curbside distribution sites are posted on the CCPS website at

Dear Parents,

This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has developed an online testing platform that will allow Milton Somers Middle School to host a school spelling bee program, whether your children are learning in classrooms or remotely from your homes.

In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold a competition through online spelling and vocabulary tests. The first step to spelling bee participation is for you to register for the Scripps National Spelling Bee's online testing platform by visiting

I encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process:

Once you have registered, I will be able to assign the appropriate test to your child. Your child must complete the test before the given deadline, and these tests can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones.

Our school champion will then move on to represent Milton Somers Middle School in Charles County Public School spelling bee program, which will also include online tests in lieu of in-person spelling bee events.

The first step to spelling bee participation is to register at Please register at your earliest convenience as I will begin assigning tests to students soon. The deadline for registering will be Friday, January 29,2021. If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.

Please reach out to me, Mrs. Amend ( if you have any questions about our school spelling bee program. I look forward to having your child compete to represent our school!

Library News from Ms. H-J!

Our Somers Seahawks are making great progress on our Books Like Us Winter Reading Challenge. They've already read over 31,000 minutes this month! The book that has been read the most is A Night Divided by Jennifer Nielsen, about a family divided by the building of the Berlin Wall. Seventh graders have been logging the most minutes. Keep on encouraging your students to read and log their minutes on Beanstack!

Just a reminder, the next Curbside Pickup will be from 12-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26th. You can stop by any school day to return books in the Somers lobby. If your student is still holding on to books from last year, please return them at your convenience.
