Math Updates
In Math this week, we started the week learning about fractions of a group. We then spent time reviewing. Wednesday and Thursday we took the Unit 7 Math test. Finally, we took time on Friday to discuss how rulers are like fraction number lines. Third graders are required to measure to the nearest 1/4 of an inch, and we use the 1/8 marks to help us decide which half inch is the closer measurement. We will dive into Unit 8 next week!

Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we finished our book, Because of Winn Dixie. We spent a lot of time discussing that in the resolution of the story, characters resolve their problems. We also discussed how they reacted to all of the challenges they faced along the way. In addition to that, we talked about how the characters changed from the beginning and end and WHY they have changed. What have they learned? Finally, we reflected on the story and the ways the author worked to connect all parts of the book to the resolution.
Next week we will begin a new book, Dyamonde Daniel, and examine her journey. She will have a lot in common with Opal from Because of Winn Dixie, but she will be very different in some ways too!

Word Study
New word study lists on Monday, March 25th with the test on the 29th.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing, we taught the students that persuasive writers take time thinking about their message. They gather, choose between, and try out different ideas for changes they’d like to see in the world. We chose ideas of things we would like to improve on at North Coventry, and after talking with partners, they wrote about what we all could do to make the improvements. We then discussed all of the important people at North Coventry and students brainstormed the most important to them. They worked with partners to give reasons why those people are important. Finally, we discussed deciding who our audience is and making sure we are working to reach them as we write. I have heard so many amazing thoughts and ideas!
