October 20th
vol. 7
Greetings,
Yet another rainy day, but hopefully, we can get some relief this weekend. I want to thank everyone in the parent community who attended the Stephen Hill Presentation on Tuesday evening. Additionally, Stephen Hill hosted an assembly for our 8th-grade students on Wednesday. I obtained a lot of positive feedback from both parents and students. Parents, if you could not participate in this program and have an 8th-grader, I encourage you to talk to your 8th-grader about the event.
DROP OFF/PARKING CHANGE- Monday
Student drop off/parking in the back of the building will not be available beginning on Monday, October 23rd. Construction that is part of the Bond Project will be taking place in that area. There will be NO through traffic between Oakland and Maple behind the school and students will not be able to use the cafeteria to enter the building. Students should please enter the front entrances to the school. We understand the inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your patience during this time. Please keep in the mind that additional time may be needed in order for students to attend homeroom on time.
8th Grade DC Trip
As many know, our trip to Washington, D.C., was reinstated. As was communicated at the coffee, the cost of the trip has increased because of transportation and lodging. We are adjusting to make the trip more attainable for all our students. Our PTO parent community recently started a GoFundMe to help subsidize the cost of the trip. Please see the link below and consider sharing it with your families, friends, relatives, and loved ones. Thank you for your continued support.

The PTO is hosting a car wash on Saturday, October 28th from 10:00am - 1:00pm to help raise funds for the 8th Grade Washington D.C. Trip.

Upcoming events:
Oct 21: FREE FAMILY EVENT- Red Ribbon Drug Prevention 5K and Walk. Aimed at educating youth on the dangers of drugs and encouraging them to live a drug-free lifestyle at Nomahegan Park, Cranford, NJ.
Next week, October 23-27, LCJSMS will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. This is a nationally recognized week that serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. The theme for RRW this year is “Be Kind to Your Mind”. We will be focusing on ways students can nurture their minds in healthy ways, reaching beyond not using drugs. After all, a healthy mind is less likely to turn to harmful substances.
On Wednesday, October 25th, we ask that all students in the district wear red to show they are taking the pledge to Be Kind to Their Minds and live drug-free.
During lunch periods throughout the week, students are invited to play games of jeopardy during lunch to learn more about the dangers of using harmful substances during adolescence.
We encourage families to continue these important conversations at home and open the door of communication for substance prevention.
If you are the parent of an 8th-grade student, we encourage follow-up conversations at home on the messages they heard at the Stephen Hill assembly, "First Choice, Second Chance".
If your child would like to submit a proposal for the 2024 Red Ribbon Week Theme, they can enter the contest here. The winner will receive $500 worth of Red Ribbon Week merchandise and will have national recognition, showing they are a great leader in the effort to curb early substance use!
If you have any questions on how to talk to your child about substance prevention or have concerns, please reach out to Student Assistance Counselor, Monica Galasso: mgalasso@summit.k12.nj.us.

Student Identification Badges (Student IDs)
Our school district is placing a strong focus on school safety and security. As such, we are intensifying our focus on students wearing their student IDs at all times throughout the school day. Students who are not wearing their IDs could incur disciplinary consequences, after a certain number of infractions (3 or more per month). We would appreciate the support of our parent community in emphasizing that message at home.
Student Lateness to School
Our school district holds student attendance and timeliness to school as an utmost priority to ensure student academic success. Students with four (or more) tardies per month (regardless of reason) will be assigned a Central Detention. Students will be given additional detentions for subsequent tardy points (8, 12, 16). These totals will be run once per month at the end of the month. Central Detentions are held from 2:55-3:35 PM Tuesday through Thursday. Further, extended detentions (until 5 PM) will be assigned for students with chronic tardiness. Additionally, students may be excluded from school activities for chronic lateness. We know the traffic in this area is a challenge and we are appreciative of parent support in helping students to arrive on time to school each day!
