Principal's Message
Our science fair this year has been awesome. Ms. McCarter, Ms. Sladek, and Ms. Murdock have done an excellent job of planning the events. Our volunteer judges were here yesterday all morning evaluating and talking with students about their scientific thinking. Below are pictures of our great group of judges and student projects and their conversations with the judges. We sure do appreciate our JUDGES and their volunteer time for us. Everyone is welcome to come to view the projects at 5:30 tonight and awards will begin at 6:00.
GT parent nominations are due tomorrow, Friday, January 22. This is a district deadline and exceptions can not be made. Nominations can be given to the teacher or to the office.
We are thrilled to announce a new staff member who will be working with us this semester. Due to the high enrollment in third grade, the district is providing us additional instructional support. Beth Leonard, a certified teacher and special education specialist, will be providing in class support, small group interventions, and enrichment opportunities for third graders. She has extensive AISD experience in a variety of settings and has worked in a district level as a behavior specialist. We are happy to have her.
Explore UT
EXPLORE UT is Saturday, March 5th, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Explore UT, the big open house held every year at the University of Texas at Austin, invites K-12 students and families to come for a day of learning and fun. The event is free. Families can take part in more than 380 activities, which include taking part in a Hogwarts Potion Class, a trial of Goldilocks, and a march to the Tower with the Longhorn Band. Again this year, the University will run a free shuttle bus from the UT charter elementary school, 2200 East 6th, to and from the UT campus all day long. Feel free to climb aboard.
2015-2016 Parent Survey
Today, parents will be receiving the AISD Parent Survey in their child's Thursday Folder. We encourage parents and families to offer feedback on the 2015-2016 school year by completing the AISD Parent Survey. Your opinions are important and will be taken into consideration as we strive to serve our students better. You may also complete the survey online at www.austinisd.org. Thank you for taking the time to help us understand our strengths and opportunities for improvement.
Counselor's Corner
College. Ready?
It may seem like a long time from now, but it’s never too early to start thinking about college. On January 27, 2016, as part of our college and career readiness week, we have a unique opportunity to hear from a college recruiter about how to be college-ready…starting now. Mr. David Romero, Texas Regional Recruiter for Iowa State University, will be discussing topics like what colleges are looking for in students, how families can prepare early for kids to succeed in college, and what resources are available to make college more affordable and more likely. Mr. Romero will also take some time to answer any questions you have about helping your kids prepare for college.
This will be from 8:00-8:45 a.m. in the cafeteria, and coffee and donuts will be provided. Please RSVP to nicole.lozo@austinisd.org by January 22 if you plan on attending. All Boone Elementary Parents are welcome!
Nurse Notes - Susan Shineldecker, R.N.
How is everyone doing keeping healthy in the New Year? I try to start my day with a Kale smoothie. My kale smoothie has kale, Greek yogurt, 1/2 banana, blueberries, cinnamon, flax seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, some frozen fruit and water. Below is a great “create your own smoothie” recipe. This smoothie combines important nutrients to provide energy for a great morning and helps keep our bodies healthy.
Create your own smoothie by choosing 1 item from each category.
¼ - ½ cup of: water or ice or milk or yogurt
½ -1 cup of: Banana or pineapple, or strawberries or blueberries
Handful of: Spinach or kale or carrot or celery
1-2 Tablespoon of: Peanut butter or flax seeds (ground) or Chia Seeds or oats or Greek yogurt
