Principal's Corner
Todd Binnicker, Principal
We are blessed to have such amazing students, parents, and community! My thanks go out to all of you for your continuous support this year of our school and its programs. Numerous activities are still planned for the remainder of the year. I encourage you to make note of them under “Dates to Remember” and stay involved. End-of-Year testing will be here before you know it. Please take a look at the "Testing and Conferences" article and add these dates to your calendar.

Erin's Law
Dear Parent/Guardian,
In 2014 the South Carolina Legislation passed Erin’s Law as part of Health and Safety Education. The purpose of the law is to ensure that all students, Pre-Kindergarten through High School, receive this prevention instruction during the academic school year. The intent of the law is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to remain safe from sexual assault and how to make a report if an assault occurs.
Instructional units were written as a resource guide for school personnel to implement Erin’s Law. These units are aligned with South Carolina Academic Health and Safety Education. Lesson content varies from grade to grade.
Partnering with First Light, formerly Foothills Alliance, between March 21-23 a representative from First Light will be presenting this lesson to your student. Information about the curriculum can be found at http://www.erinslaw.org/ and https://www.foothillsalliance.org/.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school counselor.

BLESSING BOX at Powdersville Middle
Sterling Ragsdale, an eighth-grade student, saw a Blessing Box while traveling and was inspired to build one for our school family and community. A Blessing Box is a “Little Free Pantry”, which provides non- perishable food (like cereal, canned soup/pasta, granola bars) as well as hygiene items (including shampoo, soap, toothbrushes/toothpaste and toilet paper) to local residents when they need them.
Along with the help of her dad and the support of her mother, Sterling designed, built, painted, installed, and stocked our Blessing Box which is located to the left of our front office door. A sign hangs from the front of the Blessing Box which says: “Take what you need, give what you can . . . above all, be blessed!”
PVMS Student Council News
The PVMS Student Council sponsored a Valentine’s Spirit Week in February. Students participated in dress up days, purchased Vali-grams for their friends, and attended the Valentine’s Dance held on Valentine’s Day. Some of the money raised from this event will be used for “The Peyton Valiquette Project” which will be a special school project of Peyton’s choosing.
In April, the PVMS Student Council will sponsor a Talent Show. The tentative date is Friday, April 28 at 7:00pm. This will be a fun night of showcasing the talent of our PVMS students and faculty!
The Rotary Club of Reedy River Greenville will be hosting the 19th Annual Duck Derby on May 6, 2023 beginning at 11:00am. The Rotary Club of the Reedy River Greenville will once again partner with Publix for the grand prize of one year’s worth of groceries. A full list of other prizes may be found on the race website (https://www.duckrace.com/greenville).
The PVMS Student Council is helping to raise money for the Rotary Club by encouraging duck adoptions. Please consider “adopting” some ducks to support the community service projects of the Rotary Club. Please select the “Powdersville Middle School Team” so that our team will receive credit for the adoption as this is a fundraiser for our school.
Teacher’s Appreciation Week is May 8 - 12, 2023. The PVMS Student Council is planning several treats for the teachers during that week. Please consider reaching out to your child’s teachers to let them know how much they are appreciated!
Elections for PVMS Student Council Officers will take place in May. More details will be provided after Spring Break for students who are interested in a leadership position on the student council.
Thank you for your continued support of the PVMS Student Council!

Foothills Alliance Is Now First Light
To Our Valued Clients, Community Partners, and Supporters:
Thank you for trusting Foothills Alliance with your care and for working hand in hand with us to help make our community a better place. For over 30 years, it has been our privilege to educate, advocate for, and heal survivors of sexual assault and child abuse in Anderson and Oconee Counties. Now, we hope you will join us in celebrating as Foothills Alliance becomes First Light: A 24/7 Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Resource Center.
The services we provide will not change or be interrupted and all of our services will continue to be provided at no cost to our clients. There will be no change in staff or management. Our phone numbers will remain the same and our email will forward to our new addresses. This change will be official as of February 27th, 2023.
The name First Light is meant to remind our community of the soothing feelings associated with the dawning of a new day. Regardless of the specific nature of a client’s previous experiences, our agency’s goal is that their first encounter with us marks the beginning of a new chapter of hope and healing in their lives.
Our new identifier shares three important pieces of information about our agency. First, that we are available to help any time, day or night. Second, we serve those affected by sexual assault or child abuse. And third, that First Light is a real place where our community can expect to find helpful resources in a time of need.
As advocates for those who have been victims of sexual assault and child abuse, it is important for us to raise awareness and be a resource to those who need us. With a new name and identity, it is a new day for First Light. We are eager to continue educating, advocating, and healing in our community.
Our new website will go live on February 27th and I encourage you to sign up for our newsletter to keep up with the many other exciting events we have planned for 2023! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We look forward to continuing providing excellent service to you, your family, and our community.
Girls Who Code is a wonderful after school program for 6-8th grade girls! Please consider joining our group in August!

Gift Card Program
Powdersville Middle School offers the opportunity to purchase gift cards as a great way to earn credit for your child’s school field trips and to help Powdersville Middle reach its goals for school improvement! Every gift card you purchase gives you 100% of the purchase value in addition to a designated credit percentage (80% of profit) towards your child’s trip and a designated percentage (20% of profit) towards the school's improvement goals. This program has paid the entire field trip cost for many of our students and their parents in past years. Consistency is the key! Don’t buy gas without gift cards! Ingles and WalMart/Sam’s Club give discounts on gas if you buy with gift cards! Don’t buy groceries, eat out, or go to the movies without gift cards! Don’t buy birthday, wedding, or shower gifts without gift cards! Don’t do home improvements or purchase appliances without gift cards! Definitely don’t go shopping without gift cards! Encourage relatives, neighbors, and co-workers to order gift cards in your child’s name.
There are many gift cards available through our online ordering. To get started, go to www.scripzone.com. Our group ID is 864269PMS. It is best to use your child’s name when you register as a new user.
Order by Tuesday morning and get them Thursday afternoon. You may pick them up at the school or we can send them home with your child.
We are not able to accept postdated checks.
A record is kept of your child’s credit through our online software. A record of your credit may be requested through e-mail (pvmsgiftcards@gmail.com).
We are not able to exchange gift cards after they have been picked up or sent home by your child. Please check your written or online order carefully before submitting. If we make a mistake in filling your order, we will be glad to make the necessary correction. We keep order forms on file for verification.
Plan ahead for what you will need for holidays. Filling orders the week before holidays is very challenging and availability is not guaranteed. Order early to ensure that you get what you need!
