Utah EMS Education Update
September 2019
Welcome!
Spinal Immobilization Seated Patient
Spinal Motion Restriction Supine Patient Skill
That said, it can be eliminated effective immediately from the EMT psychomotor exam. You are welcome to teach the skill, if you feel it really necessary, however, you no longer have to test it.
In the joint position paper the use of backboards should be limited to extrication and movement. When it is safe to do so the patient should be removed from the backboard. The stretcher, scoop, and backboard provide the same amount of support and restriction of movement. When a patient is placed supine on a backboard their respiratory effort is negatively effected, improper padding can increase or create pain, and failing to pad down the sides can create dangerous movement for a patient who's head is immobilized. The statewide protocol guidelines support the transition away from backboards as well as PHTLS 9th Edition. This all comes as a response to the NEXUS study and the joint position paper. The National Scope of Practice Model also updated to change the terminology from spinal immobilization to spinal motion restriction.
