From the Desk of Mr. Huotari

What does it mean to dare to be different? This is the question I have challenged our students and staff with this year. That question has been a little harder to answer than you might think.

When I first started presenting on Dare to be Different, I talked about holding true to yourself. I talked about the influence of social media and the embarrassment that can stem from going out on your own to be different than the majority. I still think that is a key piece of the puzzle, but there is a little bit more. You also have to do all of that while stretching yourself to be better…..at everything you do. It is not good enough to say, “I stink at math,” and use that as an excuse to not try. It is not good enough to walk past a stranger in need and say, “I am not really that outgoing, it is hard for me to start a conversation on a whim.” It only becomes good enough when you use your strengths and resolve to get better at your weaknesses…..TO MAKE THE COMMUNITY, CITY, STATE, AND WORLD A BETTER PLACE.

I am not satisfied with just being good at some things. I want to be better at A LOT of things. I am going to strive to do just that. I am going to recognize and celebrate my strengths and work on my weaknesses, all to make East a better place to be. I am going to Dare to be Different in every situation and choose the right thing…….which is often the harder thing.

Go Flashes!

News from the Clinic

Attention parents of 6th graders: The Indiana State Department of Health requires Tdap and MCV4 (meningitis) immunizations upon entering 6th grade (in addition to the immunizations already received up to Kindergarten). If your child has had these, please provide a record for the school. If your child has not had these, schedule an appointment to have these completed. If we do not have an updated immunization record showing your child has had the required immunizations, he/she will be excluded from school until we receive the update.

Attention all parents: please complete the required health forms/consent forms for this school year if you have not done so already. Students without permission will be seen for emergencies but not routine visits. Students without permission may have a temp taken and sent back to class. If you still need the required forms, they are posted at the end of this newsletter.

Please refer to the student handbook for further information regarding Student Health Services.

Lastly, if you have any gently used clothing that meets the dress code and you would like to donate, the clinic could use these items. Students sometimes have need of a change of clothing during the day.
