Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills families,
At a recent staff meeting, we looked at the types of questions students would need to respond to on the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Even though the assessment is only for 3rd through 5th Grade students, it was important all teachers were aware of the new skills required of students. In the case of Reading, Smarter Balance expects students to provide proof for their answers by citing or referring to the text. The good news is this is not an isolated skill we expect students to use only during the State Test. Rather providing evidence for your thinking is a skill we coach our students in all subject areas. Our Teacher Evaluation program also aligns with this practice. Teachers are challenged to create learning opportunities in which students are able to provide proof for their ideas.
If you would like to work with your student on this skill, the following sentence starters and examples below may be useful to see if your student is able to provide evidence for their ideas.
Textual Evidence Sentence Starters

Remember all those why questions your toddler asked? Well, it’s your turn now to ask them why they think the way they do. I hope you will enjoy the deeper discussions this type of discourse could lead to.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner

I wanted to thank all the parents who came to help with the Valentine’s Party. I also want to thank the teachers for helping make these parties so much fun! Our students had a great time.
