Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

In this week of giving thanks, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support of our school and our programs and activities. From our record-shattering attendance at PAC Bingo to your support this past week at the events detailed below, I want to acknowledge how grateful I am and how blessed we are to work in partnership with all of you for our students and for our community.

On Thursday, our Pasta pARTy was a great success; covering our scholarship for a deserving Nashoba senior, providing an opportunity for you to connect with local artisans and for us to share a delicious meal together! Following the Pasta pARTy, I was asked to host a trivia fundraiser at Nashoba Regional HS for our former colleague Kevin Lacoste, now a principal in Westford who was paralyzed in an accident this summer. It was great to see a number of you and your children participating. I'm happy to report that over $3000 was raised during this event for Kevin and his family.

On Friday, we hosted the Annual Dodgeball Tournament for students in grades 6-8! Proceeds went toward the grade 8 class trip. The Grade 8 "Blue" team completed an undefeated run of games on their way to the 2019 Dodgeball Championship.

There are two full days of school this week. There is no school on Wednesday, in advance of the Thanksgiving break. Today, we welcomed former teachers and students, NRSD school leaders, first responders, community members and friends of FSS as they shared books with our students during Community Reading Day. For pictures of Community Reading Day 2019, please follow us on Twitter. Tomorrow, the FSS Student Council will facilitate their annual Food Drive for Wheat Community Cupboard of the United Way. Students can bring food donations into their class and the Student Council will collect them. We will end our day tomorrow, weather-permitting, with our annual Student-Faculty Flag Football game pitting the youthful and athletic eighth-graders against the "seasoned" faculty around 1:45.

Coming out of the Thanksgiving break, Tryouts will begin for the Interscholastic Basketball teams. The girls' first tryout will be on Monday, December 2 from 4:15 to 5:30. Student-athletes may return to school for the tryout or stay in the library with permission until 4:15. On Tuesday, December 3, tryouts for the boys' team begins right after school at 3:15. The following three links will take you to registration as well as the athletic handbook and rules governing MS athletics.

Also in December, the FSS Drama Society will begin auditions on 12/17 & 12/18 for their March production of Honk, Jr. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Yours in partnership,

Joel Bates,

Student Council Food Drive - November 26

On November 26, the FSS Student Council will be collecting for the WHEAT Food Pantry. This collection coincides with our annual Student-Faculty flag football game pitting the 8th graders against the teachers in our Pre-Thanksgiving Day Football Classic (Weather Permitting). We collect the food as "admission" to the game but please note that all donations are voluntary. Students can start to bring in items as early as tomorrow. The Student Council has developed the following flyer 2019 Food Drive as a guide for grade levels but please note they are only suggestions. As always, participation in this drive is completely voluntary.

Thank you for your support!

After School Ski-Club

Parent Information Meeting Monday, Dec 2 @6:30 in the FSS cafeteria.

Welcome to the 2020 Afterschool Ski Club! Ski Club is designed to be a fun opportunity for students to take lessons, practice and ski/board with their friends at Wachusett Mountain.

Who: Students 3rd-8th grade and Parent Chaperones. Students must be able to ride the chair lift themselves and will be placed in a chaperone group with buddies who ski at their level. Any beginners not able to ride the lift and a green run will be in a chaperone group together and need to sign up for lessons.

When: 6 Fridays starting on Jan. 3th. 1/10 is an early release and we go up early for a longer day on the mountain. Weather cancellations will be attempted to be rescheduled.

Where: Students will ride a bus to Wachusett, departing from and returning to Florence Sawyer School. Gear can be dropped off at school Friday morning, kids will have time to change before leaving school. We are required to pay the bus fees even if parents choose to transport students themselves.

How: Register! At www.wachusett.com/schoolgroups Use the code: SYER The bus fee is an automatic add on, but you may also add lessons, a pass (if you plan on extra days on the mountain), a park terrain passes and pre-loaded $ cards for use in the lodge. Lessons for all levels will be offered each Friday, they are a great deal and required for beginners. Prices go up after 12/4/18, so try to register early!

A big change for this year Rentals: We are asking anyone in need of rentals to secure season-long rentals. The logistics of splitting up the group, assigning chaperones, and the very long lines is a big hassle for coordinating and for the kids. Picking up weekly rentals at Wachusett eats up nearly the entire first evening and a chunk of time each week of our already short time on the mountain. If this is an issue, let me know and we can work it out. Below is a list of local places you can look into:

R.J. Bradleys-Littleton, Summit Ski and Snowboard, Zimmermans-Nashua, Sport Loft- locations in Acton, Leominster and Boylston, Ski Barn- Westborough

We need chaperones for the season, ideally 2-3 on each bus, a handful in the lodge and a skiing chaperone for every group of kids. Chaperones receive a free ski pass for the night and a free ski weekend during the season.

We will have an informational meeting in early December watch your email for details. There is a FAQ page on the Wachusett website under School Groups.

Email Annie at bear2th@gmail.com with any other questions and to volunteer.

PAC Update:

During this season of Thanksgiving, I have been reflecting on the things I am most grateful for. Primarily among them is our community and school system. We would like to say thank you to the Florence Sawyer School families for all the time, donations and volunteer hours you have given to ensure that we are providing the best enrichment support for our students, teachers, and staff. Without you, we would not be able to do all that we do. We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving filled with abundance, gratitude, and joy.
