Veterans Day
Root’s 7th grade Gladiators and Spartans teams had an unexpected surprise on Tuesday, November 23, when a local Air Force Vietnam veteran who had received a Veteran’s Day thank you letter responded to Root’s students with a sincere, heartfelt letter of appreciation. Root salutes its veterans today and everyday.
Veterans Day Essay Contest
Members from the American Legion Post 202 read the over 360 essays submitted for this year's Veterans Day Essay Contest. We are pleased to announce the following students from Root have placed in the contest. Each student received a certificate and a cash award. Additionally, both were introduced by a veteran from the American Legion Post 202 as they read their work at the Medina City School Board meeting on November 15. We are proud of the hard work of both of these students.

Food Drive
This year's canned food drive sponsored by the North Coast Browns Backers and numerous Medina businesses was its most successful food drive to date. AI Root Middle School, Claggett Middle School, Fenn Elementary, Waite Elementary and Heritage Elementary joined to collect over 11,500 cans which were donated to help families here in Medina County. This was the 15th year of the annual event and the students and staff of all participating schools responded with phenomenal numbers.
Root Middle School collected 2,919 cans and held an in-house competition amongst the grade level teams. The winning team was the 7th grade Spartans. As a reward for collecting the most food items as a team, the Spartans won a donut party. Other incentives for donating cans were gift cards, t-shirts, bracelets, Cleveland Guardians tickets, and Cleveland Monsters tickets.
