Veterans Day

Root's 7th Grade Gladiators and Spartans teams combined efforts in social studies as students wrote letters to Veterans acknowledging their selfless contributions and thanking them for their service in lieu of the full school Veteran's Day assembly due to current Covid policies. Letters were delivered for distribution to area organizations which were recognizing veterans through dinners, personal visits, and hospital visits such as the Veterans Administration, VFW Post 5137, and the Medina Church of the Nazarene. The veterans were extremely appreciative and expressed their astonishment at the warmth and understanding the students showed through their writing. One Vietnam Veteran stated that, "this (the thoughts in the letters) was what needs to be shown to all vets returning home" with tears in his eyes.

Root’s 7th grade Gladiators and Spartans teams had an unexpected surprise on Tuesday, November 23, when a local Air Force Vietnam veteran who had received a Veteran’s Day thank you letter responded to Root’s students with a sincere, heartfelt letter of appreciation. Root salutes its veterans today and everyday.

Veterans Day Essay Contest

Members from the American Legion Post 202 read the over 360 essays submitted for this year's Veterans Day Essay Contest. We are pleased to announce the following students from Root have placed in the contest. Each student received a certificate and a cash award. Additionally, both were introduced by a veteran from the American Legion Post 202 as they read their work at the Medina City School Board meeting on November 15. We are proud of the hard work of both of these students.

Kindness Month in the 7th Grade

Root's 7th grade Spartans and Gladiators teams celebrated the month of November with Kindness Month. Seventh grade staff members looked for students going above and beyond in doing acts of kindness, however small, and recognized them with a ticket. Tickets from both teams were then entered into a drawing in which students could win gift cards which included Handels, McDonalds, and Sweets & Geeks. Winning students from the Gladiators team were: Mylla Willson, Nicholas Bowman, Sarah Welling, Logan Morrison, and Octavia Lang. Students from the Spartans team were McKenzie Milano, Adrianna Carrera, Aiden Sheetz, Brian Hlywiak, and Maddie Murray. Thanks to all students for their continued acts of kindness.

North Coast Browns Backers

Food Drive

This year's canned food drive sponsored by the North Coast Browns Backers and numerous Medina businesses was its most successful food drive to date. AI Root Middle School, Claggett Middle School, Fenn Elementary, Waite Elementary and Heritage Elementary joined to collect over 11,500 cans which were donated to help families here in Medina County. This was the 15th year of the annual event and the students and staff of all participating schools responded with phenomenal numbers.

Root Middle School collected 2,919 cans and held an in-house competition amongst the grade level teams. The winning team was the 7th grade Spartans. As a reward for collecting the most food items as a team, the Spartans won a donut party. Other incentives for donating cans were gift cards, t-shirts, bracelets, Cleveland Guardians tickets, and Cleveland Monsters tickets.
