The Eagle Update
The Excel Academy Weekly Newsletter: April 11, 2022
Greetings Excel Community,
Spring is the time of plans and projects. -Leo Tolstoy
This seems like the perfect way to describe this time of year in schools. This is a time when fun projects are happening to wrap up the year or exciting things are being planned for the next. We are often celebrating growth or demonstrating learning and finding ways to surround ourselves with the joy of this work and relish the milestones.
There is still a lot of learning to do in the weeks ahead, and we also have:
Laps for Learning
Kindness Week and A Day Without Hate
Field Studies (in and out-of-state)
HS Graduating Class Breakfast
Kindergarten and Eighth-Grade Continuations
A Middle School Dance
New Family Orientation
Final Trimester Awards
Day of the Notables...and of course, staff appreciation fun!
There are certainly lots of "plans and projects" and the buzz in the air is such a joyful feeling.
We have completed the first week of CMAS testing. Several families have asked about the pros and cons of testing and why schools do it. The state of Colorado does use the data for a variety of different purposes connected to funding and to ensure that students in Colorado are meeting standards. At the school level, we are able to use the data to determine supports in the coming year, find areas of strength in our curricula and finds areas of opportunity in our programming. We also get to celebrate the growth of our students from year-to-year and that is always an exciting part of our work.
The staff of Excel have worked so hard in support of every child here and this time of year becomes a way for us to acknowledge every educator's contributions to learning as well. As we continue working on plans and projects, please know that in a year that has been extremely challenging, there are so many dedicated folks working hard each day on behalf of kids....and it is a joyful feeling.
End of Year Library Update
Federal School Meal Waivers 2022-23
It was recently announced that the federal waivers currently in place for school meals will not be extended into the 2022-23 school year. Without a waiver extension, we will return to a more traditional service where meals are not universally free. Therefore, it will be essential that families complete a free and reduced meal application when it is available on Friday, July 1 for the 2022-23 school year. We will continue to communicate these changes extensively as we move towards the next school year.
Earth Day Community Project: Community Garden
In celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd, each class will be planting seeds for “starter pods” that will be transplanted into the Excel Academy Community Garden at the end of May. The plants harvested from the Community Garden will be donated to a local food bank.
