A Letter from Mrs. Shaver
Dear Students, Parents, and Families,
When I started at Tualatin Elementary in 2003, I never imagined this school and
community would become my home for the next 17 years! As a new special education teacher,
I joined the staff for the last year at the old building with the bright yellow awnings located
where Marquis Assisted Living now stands on Boones Ferry Road. I recall a ceiling tile falling off
the roof and landing on the desk in front of me and two other students as we worked on math
– seems like a lifetime ago! In 2006, I made the shift to the Literacy Specialist position when I
realized how much I enjoyed helping kids learn to read. This is my 15 th year in the Literacy
Center and I have had the joy and honor of getting to work with some of the most amazing
tutors who truly love our students and work tireless to perfect their craft. I have also had the
privilege of working with some truly inspirational and talented educators.
Tualatin Elementary is a special community – filled with caring staff, community
members, and families alike. The most special part for me, however, is the children that fill the
halls (when not in distance learning anyway!) and warm our hearts. Thank you for sharing your
children with me – I will miss them and this community greatly. I was recently offered an
unexpected opportunity to become a Literacy Specialist in another school district. After much
thought and discussion with my family, I decided that although I don’t like it, change is good
and a necessary part of all new learning and experiences. The district, Mr. Kingery, and I have
been working on supporting this change with a smooth transition and I feel confident that the
new Literacy Specialist, hopefully to be announced soon, will bring many new and wonderful
qualities to our school. My goal is to help support this person for the next few weeks prior to
winter break so that he/she feels ready to take over Literacy Specialist duties fully when school
resumes after break in January 2021.
I wish you, your students, and families all the best and hope to occasionally pop in and
say hello if the opportunity exits. In my head – once a Black Bear, always a Black Bear!
Sincerely, Christy Shaver

Game Time!
We have an exciting new opportunity for our students. We have heard from many families that kids are wanting to see and socialize with their friends. It is so hard to meet all the social needs of our kids in this virtual world, and we have one idea that hopefully provides some fun, socialization, and a chance to see friends!
Each Wednesday, beginning December 2nd, students will have an opportunity to join a game group for 30 minutes. This time will be spent chatting and playing a game led by Jessica Zaiger, our EBS Instructional Assistant, or Erin Gillam, School Psychologist/Counselor. Your student will find a button on their classroom homepage that is a link to join this google meet!
Below you will find the times and specific links for each group. If you have any questions, please email Jessica at jzaiger@ttsd.k12.or.us or Erin at egillam@ttsd.k12.or.us

Social and Emotional Learning: Gratitude
The week of November 23-27 the SEL competency was Gratitude. Gratitude doesn't just feel good. Making a habit of gratitude can also be good for us. Like other positive emotions, feeling grateful on a regular basis can have a big effect on our lives.
