MHHS More info on Limited Model
SEPTEMBER 11, 2020
Hello Mt. Hope Students and Families,
As you know, Mt. Hope High School is opening next week with the Limited Model. The change from the Hybrid Model to the Limited Model is due to the number of students selecting In Person school and the guidance requirement of maintaining six feet of distance between high school students.
The RI Department of Education released the following guidance on August 24th: COVID-19 Facilities and Physical Plant Guidance to Reopen Rhode Island’s Elementary and Secondary Schools. Please refer to page 5 which states: “ If stable groups are not possible, high school students must maintain six feet of physical distance; please recall that the wearing of face masks is required, regardless of the maintenance of physical distancing.”
As more of our parents chose In Person learning for their child, it became impossible to adhere to the guidance as our classrooms could not hold the number of students needed while maintaining the required six feet of social distance.
We sincerely hope that the guidance will change and we will be able to decrease the space between students. At that time we would go back to the Hybrid Model.
Some families have inquired what instruction will look like for their child. Teachers will be employing various instructional models in order to engage all students in learning. As every content area is different, teachers will use the instructional strategies that are most effective in delivering their curriculum. We will continue to explore new methods of teaching in a blended environment, obtain feedback, analyze and modify our practices with the goal of providing the best educational experience for our students. Furthermore, teachers will continue to connect with their students, build relationships and personalize learning for all of their students.
Here are two (of several possible) examples of instructional models teachers may use:
Workshop Model- The teacher will use a document camera for a brief introduction to the lesson for all students (In Person and Virtual) simultaneously. Students would then work independently and/or in small groups (students who are learning virtually on that day could work with other virtual students in breakout sessions) for the remainder of the period while the teacher checks in with students to check for understanding, provide additional instruction, or feedback.
Station Rotation Model- The teacher will work with one group of students while other groups work independently on an activity (In Person and Virtual). The teacher will rotate from group to group so each group has direct contact at some point during the class.
Please know that we are in agreement that the best possible scenario for learning, is to have all students in school every day. My sincere hope is that things will continue to improve, the guidance will change and we will be able to move to the Hybrid Model with the ultimate goal of welcoming every student into their school every day!
