EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of February 26, 2018
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
Here we are welcoming a new week and already at the end of February! Where has the time gone? In just five short weeks it will already be spring break! While we are quickly approaching another break, I want to take a minute to look at a few things that have and are coming in the next few weeks and months
I want to congratulate our High School Science Olympiad Team on great competition results from this past weekend at UGA. The Team won five medals in five events and in addition to that, they also earned ribbons in 9 other events! Be sure to read the full list of results below!
I want to wish good luck to our Model UN Team who will be traveling to Savannah this Wednesday through Thursday for the Coastal Georgia Model UN Competition! Last year the Team received the "Outstanding School Delegation Award" at the Coastal Georgia Model UN Competition. This award reflected the school's exceptional performance among more than 14 competing schools at the time. I am sure that they will again come out on top! Good luck!
Our 3rd Annual STEAM Video Contest and Faculty/Staff Lip-Sync Battle was held this past Friday! All of the Students that competed did a wonderful job and I am always so impressed with their creativity and talent! It was also extremely entertaining seeing the faculty and staff have such a great time while competing as well! You can read about and see pictures of this event below.
There has been a date change to our Annual International Cultural Cafe for this year. It was originally scheduled for March 25, however, that date has now been moved to Sunday, April 22nd, in order to be in line with when we have originally held this event. If you are interested in attending this event or volunteering, you can read more about it in it's section below.
Lastly, we have some exciting field trips coming up for our 6th - 8th grade Middle School Students. Students have brought home a permission slip for these trips that must be signed and returned to our Front Desk Staff by Tuesday, March 6th. If you would like to chaperone these trips, there is also a spot on the form for you to let us know. The more the merrier! You can see more about this below!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK!
High School Science Olympiad at UGA for Regionals
Some members not pictured
Congratulations to the High School Science Olympiad team for placing sixth at the Regional tournament held at the University of Georgia on Saturday. “We were by far the smallest school at this tournament and while Science Olympiad rules allow up to seven seniors to compete on a 15 member team, FSA had none. Even with these handicaps, this young team with only 11 members had some notable performances,” said Head Coach Pamela Walsh.
“We’re looking forward to next year,” said Building Events Coach Yasin Parlak. “Our students will have more experience in Science Olympiad and we’ll be able to field a larger team.”

Chess Team Qualifier information
Hi Chess Players,
It is that time of the year when we need all tournament chess players to come out and play for Fulton Science Academy at the State Chess Team Qualifiers! The top teams from the Qualifier events will move on to the championship, which is on March 25, 2018 (more details).
This year, the Qualifier level has been split into two events to reduce the size of the tournament (last year was one huge tournament). The Qualifier tournaments are unrated and do not require USCF membership.
March 3, 2018
Students in K-3 section and 6-8 section should play this Qualifier.
March 10, 2018
Students in K-1 section and K-5 section should play this Qualifier.
In general, students should have played at least one tournament prior to these Qualifiers. Students have more fun if they are not worried about things like how to use the chess clock, etc. The exception to this is the K-1 level. As long as kids know how to play chess and are solid with all the rules, it would be ok for a child new to tournaments to play in the K-1 section.
Please register your child by clicking the links provided above. You will be given a choice to register as an Individual or a Team. Please register as an Individual (you will be put on the team list with your other teammates by GCA after you register).
If anyone has any questions about the Section their child belongs in or any other questions, please email Karen@atlchessclub.com

An important message from the nurse about this cold and flu season
LET’S HELP PREVENT COLDS,THE FLU AND OTHER INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES FROM SPREADING THIS WINTER
As the school bell rings and we are headed back to class, the threat of colds, the flu and other infectious illnesses are a major concern, especially since there are confirming reports from the Department of Public Health (DPH) that flu activity is increasing statewide, along with the number of hospitalizations due to flu-related illness. Unfortunately, we had a few students out with the flu just before the snow break.
What can we do to help prevent the spread of the flu and other infectious illnesses? The first thing is simple...wash your hands frequently! Using hand sanitizer is also an option when soap and running water are not available. However, select a hand sanitizer that is alcohol based (and as with any soap, always supervise its use with small children). Research has shown that frequent hand washing and regular use of hand sanitizers in school settings can reduce absenteeism by as much as 20% (plus) in students and staff, and increased attendance by students and staff translates to improved academic performance!
Also, follow the school's standard procedure for routine cleaning and disinfecting. Flu viruses are relatively fragile, so standard cleaning and disinfecting practices are sufficient to remove or kill them.
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items like towels, combs, brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm or sleeve when coughing or sneezing instead of the hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day,and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick especially during the first days of illness when symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious. Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you’ve had no fever for at least 24 hrs.
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
- Please allow students to watch topics on hand washing and the flu.

aftercare hours reminder
Parents, please be reminded that After - School Care is provided every day from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm for a fee of $15.00 per day or $200.00 for the month. We ask that parents pick up any remaining students by 6:00 pm, and no later, as the school closes at 6:00pm. Sometimes our Academic Teams will stay later, but these students are not considered to be in After-Care. There are also sometimes outside organizations that use our facility for sports events, so it may look like there are still plenty of people here, but these more often than not, do not include aftercare students. Thank you for your understanding.
WT Café: New Hot Lunch Provider for 2nd Semester
We have moved to a new hot lunch provider for the second semester. We are excited about this switch and hope that all of our wonderful families are too!
Let's go to costa rica
Students must be 6th grade and up. If you are interested in knowing more about this program, please speak to Mrs. Carmona.
Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
