A 1-day class designed to teach basic skills to HS students

Life Skills 101

Life Skills 101 will feature the following topics and presenters:

  1. Finances: Presented by Mandy Moore, Tri-Valley Bank Loan Officer Class will cover basic financial principals such as why and how to balance a checkbook, what is online banking, using credit cards, how to fill out a loan application, applying for financial aid, and using money responsibly.
  2. Clothing Care: Presented by Mandy Maher, Fremont County Extension & Outreach Class will cover how to read clothing care labels, how to sort, wash & dry laundry, DIY laundry detergent, making clothes last longer, basic mending.
  3. Car Maintenance: Presented by Summer Eggleston, Eggleston Kustoms Class will cover changing a flat tire, checking & changing the oil, the importance of developing a good relationship with your mechanic.
  4. My 1st Place: Presented by Nishna Productions Class will cover filling out a rental application, what expenses to budget for when seeking housing.
  5. Eating Well: Presented by Brad Johnson, 5J Catering, & Julia Shull, Fremont County Extension & Outreach Class will cover food intake recommendations (my plate), food & drink to avoid, how to shop efficiently, how to save money at the grocery store, and preparing lunch.
  6. Understanding Taxes: Presented by New Era Tax Class will cover why we pay taxes, simple tax filing, where to go for help, when to file, what documents you need to save for taxes.
  7. Insurance Basics: Class will cover health insurance options, benefits of benefits, deductible definition, budgeting for insurance needs (health and property)

Life Skills 101 is open to all students in grades 9-12. The cost to attend is $10 per person, payable to Fremont County Extension, and includes lunch and snacks. The deadline to register is Monday, January 25th at 4:30 p.m. Non-4H members must complete an Iowa 4-H Medical Information/Release Form. 4-H members must be registered at
