Nicolas Valley Elementary
"Knightly News"- April
Our Mission
At Nicolas Valley- We educate, engage, and enrich every child, every day in a safe and supportive environment.
Our Goal- To empower and equip students to be productive and responsible citizens, through the use of technology, a culture for learning, and healthy connections within the school and community.
A Note from the Principal
We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable two weeks off for Spring Break. We want to thank our generous PTA who purchased books for each student, so they would have something to read over their time off. Hopefully this motivated many of our kiddos to get some "fun" reading in during this time. The more we read, the better and more confident we become at it. Our goal to is to get all students reading at grade level. We know that the pandemic has created learning gaps for many of our students, but we are working hard everyday to close those gaps, little by little.
In addition to the learning gaps, we have seen an increase in social emotional learning needs- more students with anxiety, more students struggling with interpersonal relationships. This is why we have added daily morning meetings to our classroom routines, so that teachers can explicitly work on these skills and build these characteristics. It is also why we have a social worker on campus on Mondays and Tuesdays- to work with individuals and small groups who need a little extra attention.
In order to help facilitate growth in these areas, we are on an attendance mission. I have talked to the students at the last two Friday morning line ups about how important it is to be at school everyday, unless they are truly sick. I am now reaching out to all of our families to ask you to also make that your mission.
Students will be taking their final iReady diagnostic toward the end of the year. And this year, our 3rd-5th graders will be taking the state CAASPP test, something none of them have ever taken before, in May. April will be a month of practice and preparation for this important assessment. Again, another reason to be in school everyday.
We look forward to seeing everyone back on campus on Monday, April 4. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Ms. Harman and Mrs. O'Brien
