News from Manchester Memorial Elementary School!

November 20, 2015

Principal's Note...

Earlier this year, I was contacted by the US Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, regarding a possible sister school arrangement with an elementary school in Japan. I have been communicating back and forth with Ambassador Kennedy and her associates in Japan to build the foundation for a sister school relationship with a small school in Kyo-tango City. This school was selected for the project because they are located 3 km away from Kotohikihama Beach which has singing sands just like our Singing Beach! Ironically, it is located just north of Boston's sister city, Kyoto.

We are still in the infancy stages of the project as most of the work is in the form of developing the relationship via email. Just this week, we began to get some of the children involved in putting together an introductory package that we will mail to the school. As the language barrier is quite challenging, the initial package will be comprised mostly of artwork from our students depicting American life along with some local items that represent our culture. In the next week or so, we will mail the package off and this will officially kick off our sister school relationship with the Amino-Gakuen School! This will be a great learning experience for all...stay tuned as I will keep you updated!

I wish you all a very healthy, happy, and restful (ha ha) Thanksgiving holiday. We all have so much to be thankful for, and I am particularly thankful for my partnership with all of you. Enjoy the time with your family!

Have a great weekend!

Book Drive!

Help support the students at Memorial School by donating gently used books. We are mainly looking for books that are appropriate for grades pre-k to 5th. Book donations will be accepted from November 30th to December 11th and can be dropped off in the donation box located in the main lobby. All extra books that are collected will be donated to Family Island Book Initiative, which is a non-profit organization that brings books and reading education to the island of Exuma, Bahamas.

Student Ambassador News: Hornets CAN Drive

This year we did a can drive for the Open Door food pantry. We set a goal of around 370. We had students bring in cans to help families for the holidays. We got a amazing number of cans and we are glad that more students participated this year. We thank the classes who brought in a lot of cans by Wednesday. Mrs. Hatch, Mrs. Heslop, Mrs. Decker, Mrs. DiTullio,Mrs. Colpoys, and Mrs. Tomaiolo were some of the classes with the most cans. We are very grateful for the students contribution! Our total can count was 626! Our school exceeded our goal by 256 cans! Thank you to all of the families that donated.
