From Mr. Clemente

Dear Winter Park Band families,

Congratulations to the students in Freshman Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble II, and Jazz Ensemble I on a great Jazz Guest Conductor Workshop and Pre-MPA Concert this past Tuesday! We enjoyed having Mr. Keith Galasso with us all day both Monday and Tuesday, and learned a ton from his experience in the world of jazz. Next up, the three jazz bands perform at District 8 Jazz MPA later this week, Thursday and Friday respectively. Join us in wishing them good luck on their performances!

We had a great Annual Winter Park Band DOOR-2-DOOR Fundraiser on Saturday! Thank you so much to everyone who made this event a reality again this year, especially Heather Ribaric, Robyn Fodor, Ellen DeLoach, Kim Somers, and Dana Adkinson. An equally huge thank you to all our our volunteer drivers for taking the students around all day and for working in the counting room: Jay Adkinson, Tammy Bartell, Vallerie Becker, Melissa Blaney, Amy Byrd, Laura Cambridge, Lia Carneiro, Laura Culhane, Sarah Davey, Sarah Del Rio, Lissette Dennis, Kimberly Dorough, Robin Fell, Robyn Fodor, Kai Fu, Ekaterina Galkina, Alexandra Gravett, Jennifer Hindle, Michael Hodges, Kristopher Kest, Shannon Mellick, Jennifer Mullins, Antonella Paradiso, Paula Pratt, Chris Rediske, Heather Ribaric, Brian Ribaric, Mariela Rojas, Christy Scanlon, Amanda Schaefer, Roger Schaefer, Amy Sheppard, Cyndy Stephenson, Michael Storch, Natalie Storch, Aaron Strickland, Beth Visconti, James Visconti, and Larry Watzman.

All told from our collected donations on Saturday, we raised $24,530.00. This total does not include money collected online through SchoolPay, and I'll update the total mid-week. Way to go everyone!

I'm so excited for everyone's opportunity at Solo & Ensemble MPA this coming weekend! Be sure you are prepared with everything you need. Schedule coordination is key especially if you are performing a solo with an accompanist. Ample travel time to Horizon HS on both Friday and Saturday should be planned into your arrival time.

S&E Checklist:

  • Dress professionally
  • Have the original (publisher's) copy of your music
  • Number every measure in the score you will hand the adjudicator
  • Coordinate schedules with your accompanist
  • Remember extra reeds, valve oil, slide grease, cork grease - whatever you may need
  • Arrive at Horizon HS 30 min. before your performance time to give you lots of time to warm up properly and find your performance room.
  • Take a deep breath, relax, and have fun! You're going to do great.

If you are performing at the S&E Recital Option Recital on Wednesday, 2/5, please click here to view the schedule of performances.

Looking forward to next week, Monday 2/13 - Wednesday, 2/15, the Band program will welcome Mr. Michael Kaufman onto the WPHS campus for our annual Guest Conductor Workshop. I'm so excited for Mr. Kaufman to be here and work with the students of the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Symphony! Similar to last week's Jazz Workshop, Mr. Kaufman will be with all three bands in rehearsal Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday along with after school rehearsals for each group. The workshop culminates on Wednesday evening with our Pre-MPA Concert at 7 PM in the WPHS Auditorium. Please come out and support our students as they prepare for this performance!

Let’s make it a great week!

Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson

What can I say....you all rocked door-to-door yesterday! The amount of team work that was displayed yesterday was amazing! All coming together for the greater good :) If you were a driver, a student that walked, helped feed people, counted money or helped in any way big or small, know that your efforts are appreciated! Until next year :)

SOLO & ENSEMBLE MPA - PERFORMANCE WEEK!

WHAT'S NEXT

The week has arrived - Solo & Ensemble Week! Looking forward to seeing all your hard work and preparation pay off!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Students should have their Solo & Ensemble music with them in their music folder each day for class.

Band students have two performance options to complete the Solo and Ensemble project:

  • Option 1: Solo and Ensemble MPA. Solo and Ensemble MPA takes place each year at the beginning of February and is hosted by a school in our district, this year Horizon HS on February 10 and 11. This event is put on by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA), and allows students to perform for an adjudicator for a rating. Adjudicators for this event are professors, teachers, and performers from across the state of Florida, and students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performance from someone who is an expert on their instrument. Students perform either a solo or chamber ensemble piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and may perform in up to 4 different events. The Band program pays for the event registration for all participating students.

  • Option 2: Solo and Ensemble Recital Option. For students who choose not to perform at the Solo and Ensemble MPA put on by FBA, those students will perform as part of our Solo and Ensemble Recital at school. This year, that recital will take place in the Band Room on Wednesday, February 8, beginning at 1:30 PM. Students must select a piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and the performances will be adjudicated by both Mr. Smith and Mr. Clemente. Ms. Young would adjudicate color guard solos.
