Principal's Message

Dear Hallinan Families,

It's that time of the year that speeds by at record pace! In just a couple weeks, we'll be saying goodbye to a few good friends and I want to give you adequate time to reach out to them if you would like to do so. The wonderful Katie Larson, 5th grade teacher extraordinaire; the outstanding Jimmy Smith, our building engineer who does it all; and, the amazing Grace Sullwold, our medical EA who has a flair for art and design are all retiring this year. We are incredibly grateful for all they have done for our students, staff and Hallinan community, and we will miss them tremendously. With joy for them, and sadness for us, we wish them well!

If your family won't be returning to Hallinan next year (or moving to Lakeridge Middle School), please let us know so that we can prepare for the 2022-23 school year and make sure your child's records are forwarded to the correct school.

Wishing you a beautiful long weekend,

Melissa Griffiths

Architects in Schools with Mrs Larson's 5th Grade Class

Fifth graders in Mrs. Larson's were introduced to Architects in Schools, a program designed to introduce students to the power and possibilities of design with the end goal of creating lifelong learners and critical thinkers who have a voice in their community. Hallinan parent, Yuko Mino, and Erika Shaylitsa guided the class through a series of engaging, hands-on lessons over a six-week period. The class was tasked with designing homes for special clients, including a gorilla who likes to work-out and a penguin who is allergic to paint. See the photos below of the very creative floor plans and drawings Mrs Larson's class produced!

The LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard is up to date with the number of staff and students who have reported to LOSD testing positive for COVID-19, regardless of school exposure. With any potential exposure, people are advised to watch for illness symptoms and follow Oregon Health Authority COVID-19 exclusion procedures.

If your student experiences any of the following symptoms, please have them stay home, and contact the office or our district nurses, Ann Nelson at nelsona@loswego.k12.or.us and Nikki Retzlaff at retzlafn@loswego.k12.or.us, about possible exclusion from school and COVID-19 testing:

For the 2022-23 School Year, Smart Start is in person Aug. 25, 2022, from 1-3 p.m.

Teachers will be familiar with your student’s plan and accommodations. To help get to know your students, please complete the attached one-page profile or create one on your own ahead of time, and give it to the teacher at the Smart Start introduction.

See you on Aug. 25!

2022-23 Verification

LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2022-23 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. This benefits both families and schools by:

  • Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your address or contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
  • Confirming parent email addresses for Google Classroom and other applications to participate in your student's learning.
  • Enabling distribution of key information in the district's K-12 Family Handbook.

If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website. If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, or need assistance, please contact the office staff (contact information at the bottom of the newsletter).

State Assessment Score Reports

This summer, LOSD will deliver students’ state assessment results online through ParentVUE rather than mailing paper. This is in keeping with the district’s strategic goal of sustainability and mirrors how we deliver report cards. Your child’s assessment reports will appear on your ParentVUE Documents page in late July. As you review your student’s English Language Arts, math, and science scores, please keep in mind:
  • An achievement level of 3 or 4 is considered to be on track for the student’s grade level.
  • Scores on state assessments are only one measure of a student’s academic progress. We use these scores in conjunction with classroom work and other daily, weekly, monthly, and term assessments to understand your student’s strengths and areas for improvement.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account or need assistance, please contact your student’s school.
