Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ October 9, 2023 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
Hopefully, today, October 9th was a productive Monday off for students.
Jostens will be on campus Tuesday, October 10th for Juniors to order their class rings in-person.
PSAT is this Wednesday, October 11th. All students taking the PSAT need to bring their NISD chromebook fully charged. Please make sure to pack your chargers, too. Students, please take a few minutes to open the Bluebook app on your Chromebook and complete the Digital Readiness Check. Use the PDF below to walk through the process. If you have questions, see Ms. Lewis.
Grades will be uploaded on October 13th for report cards. Report cards will be available on October 20th. AP Payments for Comm Arts exams are also due on October 13th. For more information see the "College Board" section of this newsletter.
Campus Highlights
Hispanic Heritage Month
On October 6th, SNHS had a Cumbia Friday as part of the celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month. Some were there to learn, some were there to teach, but all were there to have a good time!
- Students can take selfies using our fiesta backdrop till October 15th.
- On October 13th, students can play LoterÃa.
This week we will celebrate Hispanic Heritage with a Dress Up Week:
- Tuesday, 10/10 - Martes de Calaveras (Sugar skulls - no face painting)
- Wednesday, 10/11 - Fiesta Miércoles (Any Fiesta attire: shirts, Mexican dresses, flower tiaras, LoterÃa cards, etc.)
- Thursday, 10/12 - Vaquero Jueves (Vaquero attire: boots and cowboy hats. Did you know, a vaquero was the original cowboy?)
- Friday, 10/13 - Rosa Raiders (Pink-Out game for breast cancer awareness.)
AP Recognition
College Board started a new recognition program this October called AP School Honor Roll. Communications Arts High School earned the highest level of distinction as well as the AP Access Award. Thank you to the teachers, parents, and students for your hard work and dedication! If you want to learn more, click here: AP School Honor Roll
STEM Night
Comm Arts had a great time recruiting future Animators, Audio Visual students and Journalists at the Los Reyes Elementary STEM Night.
Skills & Strategies Day
Students in Mrs. Frias's class worked on their Social and Emotional Learning by creating a Positive Self-Portrait, or a picture of something they like with words or phrases of encouragement for Skills and Strategies day last week.
Mythology Hotdog Mummification Results
Literary Mythology examined their mummified hotdogs from last Friday's lab. They investigated how the length and circumference changed, how it looked and smelled both on the inside and outside, and how it felt. Our hopes are to check on it again in one month to see the results.
Elections Department Tour
Manuel Alvarez, Bethany Cruz, and Timothy Potter participated in a behind the scenes tour of the Elections Department for Bexar County last Saturday. It was a great learning experience.
Report Cards
Grades due October 13th
Students and parents, to encourage timely completion of student work and to prevent our teachers from being swamped with late work turned in on the last day of the marking period, Comm Arts implements a Grade Guarantee Day for progress and report cards. Grade Guarantee Day was last Friday, October 6th.
What this means is that students who have missing assignments must have those assignments turned in by October 6th, if they want to guarantee that late work will be graded and reflected on report cards, when grades are uploaded the following Friday, October 13th. A student can still turn in missing assignments after October 6th, but a teacher may not have enough time to grade those late submitted assignments, for them to be reflected on the report card. Teachers will grade these assignments and submit grade changes after grade submission, but please note that a student's report card will reflect a failing grade, and that will affect UIL eligibility. Grade changes do not restore that eligibility. Students would regain eligibility, if passing at the next 3-week grade check.
Juniors and seniors with off campus lunch, you must be passing for report cards to remain eligible to go off campus. Students need to pick up a new off-campus lunch sticker each marking period. Also all current AP exams must be paid for to go off campus for lunch.

Counselors' Corner
Wise Words from Dr. Rosales & Mrs. Skidmore
Last Friday our students signed a Decision of Respect during their Communications Arts strand classes (i.e - audio-video production, animation, broadcast journalism) committing to uphold honorable and respectful behavior towards others. We are asking for your parental support in helping us maintain a friendly environment. Please speak with your child about reflecting on their actions not only with their friends but on social media. We want to have our students THINK before taking action. Questions to consider are:
Is what that they said - True?
was it - honest?
was it - inspiring?
was it - necessary?
was it - kind?
Remember that Wednesday is our campus PSAT day. If your student is testing, please be sure to have them preview the PSAT study guide prior to the test.

Our CAHS Principal, Dr. Lisa Baker, signed the Decision of Respect during our pep rally in front of students, faculty, and staff to show her strong support for a culture of respect and kindness.
