Gregor Mendel
The Father of Modern Genetics
Description
Gregor Mendel is the father of modern genetics. He researched most of what we know about genetics and heredity.
Early Years
Struggles
- Could not pass test
- Family had little money
Successes
- Made it to college
- Attended regular church services
Experimental Design
Crossed a pure yellow pea plant with a pure green one.
- New species came from this
- All pea plants in first generation came out yellow
- Second generation had a few green plants
Data
- Yellow is dominant
- Green is recessive
- Green only shows up in second generation
Reactions
It did not attract much attention, because most scientist thought that they already new about this stuff.
Foundation of Genetics
He laid a foundation by being the first person to study this kind of topic. He learned so much about it that people still look at hi data.
Vocab
Dominant- Gene that will overpower another gene
Example- Brown eyes are dominant.
Recessive- gene that gets overpowered by another gene
Example- Blue eyes are recessive
Codominant- Gene that is neither dominant or recessive
Example- Chickens that are black and white have codominant genes.
OMG!!!! This video is pretty neat!!!!
