A message from the Principal-Mrs. Bookman
To our Suffield Family,
Today we had our Halloween Parties and Parade. We greatly appreciate everyone who helped out by sending in supplies and goodies for our students! Although the rain prohibited an outdoor parade, we were able to have one indoors. Students enjoyed the opportunity to see everyone in costume. Follow me on Twitter for pictures! @SuffieldE
If your children go trick-or-treating this weekend, use it as a learning opportunity. Take a look at all the candy and have your child do some academic things with it. First, have them sort it into categories. This is a great language activity. Have them decide the characteristics of the candies. Chocolate? Chewy? Gum? Colors? Nuts? Have your child count the piles. Can they then add them all together? Younger students can count smaller piles and compare which is bigger.
Don't forget that there is NO SCHOOL for students on MONDAY and TUESDAY next week. We will have conferences on Monday morning and staff will have professional development in the afternoon. On Tuesday, there is voting in the buildings, so teachers will also be in sessions for professional development. We will see everyone back on WEDNESDAY!
The guidelines for quarantining due to school exposure have changed. Due to this, if your child is exposed, we will give him/her a mask and send them back to class. We will text families to let them know of the exposure and then follow up with an email stating the particulars of the "Mask to Stay" guideline. This will allow students to STAY in school! If you do not wish for your child to mask, he/she will have to be picked up from school and must follow the regular quarantine guidelines. If you receive a text from us about this and have questions, please do not hesitate to call the office.
If you did not get to turn in your child's Fall Fundraiser form and check/money, please make sure it comes to school on Monday! We thank you for your support!
Have a great weekend!

Suffield Township Trick-or-Treat
Sunday, Oct 31, 2021, 02:00 PM
Suffield Township, OH, USA
Halloween Safety Tips
• Make sure your child’s costume is bright and reflective. It should fit well and be short enough to prevent tripping.
• Ensure costumes, wigs and accessories carry a label indicating they are flame resistant.
• Consider painting your child’s face instead of using a mask that can block peripheral vision.
• Feed your family a good meal prior to Halloween parties or trick-or-treating to discourage your kids from filling up on candy.
• If your kids are trick-or-treating in an area without sidewalks, walk on the edge of the road facing traffic.
• For evening trick-or-treating, add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. All kids or their parents should have a flashlight. Glow sticks are also great.
• After trick-or-treating, sort and check your kids’ goodies. Though tampering is rare, closely examine all treats – and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
A note from the Ohio Department of Health
The Ohio Department of Health has asked schools to share this information with families:
As you know, the COVID-19 vaccination is a key to keeping Ohio’s students in the classroom, and that’s why the Ohio Department of Health has launched Ohio Vax-2-School. Ohioans between the ages of 12 and 25 who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination have the chance to win one of 150 $10,000 scholarships and one of five $100,000 scholarships to an Ohio college or university for career or technical education. The entry period is open now. To learn more about this initiative or to submit an entry, visit ohiovax2school.com or call 1-833-4-ASK-ODH.

Birthday Treats-MUST be prepackaged, ONLY
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.

Counselor's Corner- A Note From Miss Livers
Coping with Emotions
While students are ultimately responsible for the choices they make, there are things that you can do as a parent or guardian to support your student as they work on self-regulation. One of the first steps for self-regulation is to consider what your child is communicating through his/her emotions. For example, anger can often be a manifestation of other feelings like disappointment, sadness, or frustration. By getting to the bottom of the anger, you will be able to better help your child work through it. Another important part of self-regulation is helping your child learn and work on coping strategies they can use to help with the anger they are feeling. The more you practice the coping skills with your student when they are not upset the easier it will be for them to use when they are. When you see your child using their coping skills, or at least attempting to, praise them! Let them know that their efforts have not gone unseen and that you are proud of the work they have done.
Below is a sample list of possible coping skills to help your child when they are upset.
Practicing deep breathing
Yoga
Exercise
Listening to music
Singing/dancing to a favorite song
Drawing/Coloring/Painting
Reading a book
Taking a walk/break
Using a favorite fidget
Mindfulness
Practicing positive self-talk
Developing and using coping skills takes time and patience. We can't expect children to use these strategies effectively right away. It will take them some time to determine what works and what doesn't. Additionally, they may find that some coping strategies are more useful than others. Continue to empower them to choose and use what works best for them.

Crayola and schools across North America have banded together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. Suffield Elementary will now take part in recycling markers that no longer work. It’s a super easy project to help our environment! You can send in any brand of markers, sharpies, dry erase, and highlighters. Once we collect the markers, they will be shipped to a facility that repurposes them so that they are kept out of the landfills.
