Bullying Prevention
Last week we started schoolwide lessons in Bullying identification and prevention.
We started building background knowledge in all classes to have the definitions and understanding needed to continue learning about recognizing, reporting, and supporting in future weeks.
4th and 5th grade students defined:
1. Being mean= unkind words and actions (usually caused by emotions)
thoughtless (without thinking about consequences)
impulsive (happening quickly due to strong emotions)
2.Bullying= intentional (on purpose)
repeated over time
one-sided
imbalance of power
3.Harrassment= severe
harmful
humiliating/demeaning
often related to body or who you are (skin color, body parts, ethnicity, gender etc)
2nd and 3rd grade students learned to define and know the difference between mean acts and bullying.
Kindergarteners and 1st graders learned about recess bullying and the culture it can create and how to be a “recess friend” instead of a “recess bully” after reading “Recess Queen” by Alexis O’neill.
With all of this background knowledge, we will move into identifying, reporting and supporting.
Future lesson will be about Inclusiveness and friendship, as well as gratitude and giving as we approach the holidays.
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS....
We anticipate the need for volunteers this year as well.
