Weekly Update - Sept. 10, 2021

This week!

Happy weekend PIC Families,

School is settling into a routine for sure! We began the week with a community meeting in the gym last Tuesday morning. During community meetings each week, we spend about 15 minutes to go over upcoming events, important announcements, give positive shout-outs, and kick off our Positivity project theme for the week. This week we had a moment of silence in honor of the 20th anniversary of 911. Parents - if you have the opportunity, please share with your kids where you were when 911 happened and what you remember. I remember teaching Algebra I to my 8th graders when I found out about the planes crashing into the twin towers and expecting my youngest child. I remember worrying about the world that my daughter would be born into. While feeling a huge sense of loss and helplessness on Sept. 11, 2001, I also remember an incredibly strong feeling of patriotism swell within our country. Our country certainly needs unification today. Maybe remembering that fateful September day will help us all to be more understanding and grateful for the blessings we have in our country.

This week, our students were also encouraged to get involved in making Perry Innovation Center an even better place by applying for one of our many open "jobs" that make a positive difference in our school. Please see more information below about our student work experiences.

Finally, as we expand our extracurricular opportunities in the next two weeks, we are noticing that we have a lot of interest in robotics, gardening, and soon to be announced...Odyssey of the Mind. In fact, we have more interest in some activities than we have room for - unless we can get more club sponsors. Parents - if you have availability and an interest in helping with after school clubs, please contact me at ahall@gbcs.org or (810) 591-6077.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Amber Hall

Curriculum Night at PIC - Sept. 20

On Monday, Sept. 20, our curriculum night will be from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Curriculum night is an opportunity for families to learn more about the curriculum their students will study this year, teacher expectations, and systems of communication. We are still planning our format for the evening and will update families next week whether we will be in person or virtual. With the increase in Covid numbers, we are a little concerned about filling our classrooms with a large number of people so we will make a final decision by mid-week next week and let you know. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for Monday, Sept. 20 from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

A family council meeting (our parent-teacher organization) has a meeting following curriculum night at 6:30 p.m. All families are welcome to join those meetings. We meet in the PIC cafeteria but families can also join via zoom - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2408435146?pwd=OWY1a3V2L3JveTl5dytsRjc3YTkxZz09

Perry Innovation Center Raffle Ticket Fundraiser

Our parent/teacher organization (PIC Family Council) has ONE fundraiser each year which pays for field trips, guest speakers, and other unique learning opportunities. Our goal is to raise about $30,000 with our raffle ticket fundraiser. We are hoping each student can sell 15 tickets which cost $10 each. Cash prizes range from $250 - $1,000! Envelopes of 15 tickets will be ready for pick-up beginning Sept. 20 in the office or at curriculum night (if in-person). Ticket sales will occur through September and October and the drawing is scheduled for November 15 at the Family Council meeting that evening. Thank you in advance for any and all support of this important fundraiser!

PIC Gardening Club

Calling all students with green thumbs! Our PIC gardening club will begin this fall and then re-group in the spring just in time for seed planting! Please see the following document for more information and to express interest in joining!

PIC Student Work Experience program

Hello Parents,

We are back up and running for this school year and offering multiple student job opportunities for students to participate in. These real-world experiences of applying for a job, working as a team, and taking on responsibility, helps our students develop leadership skills and add to their own portfolio of experiences. Please spend a few minutes looking over the job descriptions with your student and if they find one they are interested please fill out the application from the link. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at mwindom@gbcs.org or 810-591-6104. I look forward to supporting your child with their new job opportunity.

Please click the link below to read through the job opportunities.
