Boys and Girls Club
A Message from Katie Welch, Program Director
New Faces Around Campus
Boys & Girls Clubs at Sassarini recently welcomed two new Staff Members—Myriam Soto and Angel Rosas. Angel is working with the 5th graders (a.k.a. “The Alphas”). Angel brings a fun energy that draws kids to him like a magnet! He looks forward to bringing program activities such as breakdancing, video game design, and magic to our Members. Myriam is working predominantly with the third graders (“The Panthers”) and is brings a calming energy to Club. She will be doing activities such as creative crafts and cooking projects.
We are excited to tell you about a few cool things we are doing afterschool:
· We are starting a literacy pilot with our youngest Members (1st & 2nd grade) in Power Hour (our homework help block). Members will rotate daily between three homework stations—homework completion with Brianna (our Staff), reading books on android tablets, and working with an instructional aide on mini literacy lessons.
· All of our 4th and 5th grade Members are working on coding an hour a week in the computer lab. We do this as a supplement to having no homework on Fridays. Our coding program will hopefully be featured in the Sonoma Index Tribune this week!
· This Saturday 12/12 from 1-4PM the Maxwell Club will host a free community Christmas party for families. Come check it out, we will have goodies to eat, a singalong, rock climbing, and other fun holiday activities for kids. This is open to the whole community, so non-Members are welcome to attend as well.
· Our Members of the Month for November are:
o 1st & 2nd Grade-Thaliana Garcia
o 3rd Grade-Stephen Rodriguez
o 4th Grade-Hashmed Rosado
o 5th Grade-Alysia Alvarez
Note: For students that attend intervention and Boys & Girls Club after school, please remind them to quickly sign in at the Club before going to their classroom (or jot down a quick attendance list we can use to sign them in after intervention if you have a time crunch). We currently have 13 students on our waitlist, so each month we evaluate the Members that don’t attend frequently (based on sign in data) and drop them to allow others in.
Coffee with the Principal ~ Cafecito con la Directora
We raffled a holiday gift at the end of the meeting, and the parent was happy to be the winner.
We had approximately 22 families in attendance. It was a successful turnout. Thanks Delia and Maria for all of your efforts. You rocked it!
