Education Expo!
The ninth annual Education Expo will return in-person this year and will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 6 at Patrick Henry High School. No registration is required to attend and grab-and-go snacks will be available at no cost. This event provides students and families the opportunity to learn more about the many programs available at the high school level, such as Advance College Academy, Advance Placement, The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology, The Hanover Specialty Center, International Baccalaureate (IB), Code RVA, Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, and more.
This year’s event will feature a student panel, an exhibit hall where representatives from various secondary programs will have additional information about the programs, and sessions of “Ed Talks” where you will have the opportunity to dive deeper into a specific program of interest. Please note that while the event is open to all families, it will be especially helpful for those in grades five through ten.
For more information about this event, students and families are encouraged to contact their school counselor or Andrea Herndon, Coordinator of Gifted Education and Advanced Studies, at aherndon@hcps.us.
We look forward to seeing you in November and appreciate your support of the many opportunities we offer our students.

Attention: Bus Drivers Needed!
We hope you are having a great week. We are excited to share with you that we are now offering a new $3,000 sign-on incentive for new bus drivers!
Our bus drivers play a pivotal role in the operation of our schools and we greatly appreciate all they do to ensure our students get to and from school safely. As you are likely aware, there is currently a nationwide bus driver shortage and we are not immune from this issue. We are incredibly grateful for our existing bus drivers and we are looking for more drivers to join our incredible team.
In addition to the new $3,000 sign-on incentive, base rate of pay, other benefits include: a flexible schedule, medical benefits, a retirement plan, and paid training. Bus drivers who join our team before the end of the 2023-24 school year will earn $1,000 after their first 60 days of successful employment as a full-time bus driver, $1,000 after 120 days of employment as a full-time bus driver, and $1,000 after 180 days of employment as a full-time bus driver. Please note that full-time bus drivers hired since July 1, 2023 are eligible for this incentive as well.
If you or someone you know is interested in joining our Transportation Department, please apply via School Jobs.
In addition to the new sign-on incentive, HCPS bus drivers receive the following:
- Pay incentives for drivers completing additional routes
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits
- Virginia Retirement System benefits, including life insurance
- Flexible schedules with most drivers working two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon
- Eligible for up to $730 of financial wellness incentives each year
- Eligible for up to $800 of tuition reimbursement each year
- Salary pay for 12 months, but work 10 months
- Sick days and paid holidays
- Fully compensated Commercial Driver’s License training
- Tuition-Free enrollment for non-resident school aged children
New bus drivers are placed on a four-hour-per-day schedule and are paid from their first day of employment, including training. The eight-week training period includes tutoring and other educational support to help with passing the CDL testing requirements.
Again, we ask that you consider becoming a bus driver or encourage someone you know to apply to help keep our bus routes fully staffed, which helps our students receive the great education they deserve.
If you have any questions about becoming a bus driver or about this incentive program, please contact Stacie Johnson at sjohnson@hcps.us.
