Words Their Way: Quiz Friday
Reading
In March, thanks to a ZEF Grant, we will have the amazing opportunity to have writer Margaret Peterson Haddix come to Stonegate to talk to the 4th grade. As part of the grant, each student will be receiving a copy of Running Out of Time, which we will begin reading this week. For the first six chapters, we will work on close reading strategies and all students will have the same assignment each day so we can discuss expectations. After that, we will be reading the remainder of book in literature circles, with each student having a different "job" each day and meeting with their group for a student-led discussion. I also have started reading Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix during read aloud so they have background with her literature before they meet her.
Indiana History
We will be starting Unit 4 in Indiana History this week by studying the Underground Railroad. Next week, we will study the Civil War and the following week, we will study the Reconstruction. Our next test is tentatively set for March 3.
Science
We are finished with the first lesson where we learned all about the forces that act on planes, boats, and objects as they move. We will finish this week by completing two inquiries to demonstrate some of these forces. We will test over Unit 5 on February 19.
Math
This chapter is all about fractions and probability. By the end of this week, your child should be able to identify the fraction shaded within a shape, identify a fraction on a number line, identify the fraction of a group (i.e. 3/4 of 12 = 9), and give an equivalent fraction. Please, please, please continue to work with your child on multiplication and division facts if they are not fluent. It will make their lives much easier as they compute equivalent fractions. Students are also welcome to log on to Khan Academy to practice any skills!

Valentine's Day Party
One fun activity we always do is for each student to bring in a baby picture. The pictures are displayed and we guess who the baby might be. Please send in a baby picture of your child with his/her name on the back. I will return the picture, but please know it will be stapled to the wall. If it is the last copy that exists, you may want to make a copy before sending it in! I would love to have those by this Friday if you haven't sent it in already.
Class lists were sent home so your child can begin creating valentines to exchange. We have 23 students in the class right now. Students need to bring in some kind of container to collect valentines. If they want to decorate the container, that is fine, but it can be as simple as a grocery bag with their name on it.
