The G-Dub Hub
November 2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Happy November! I hope all of our families are enjoying the fall weather and are looking forward to our upcoming Thanksgiving Break! This is a month that we generally pause and reflect on what we are thankful for.
I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our Keokuk community Veterans for your dedicated service to the United States Armed Forces. We will forever be grateful for your bravery and sacrifices to protect our country’s freedom. We look forward to honoring all Veterans at our annual Veteran’s Day ceremony, November 9.
Parents, thank you for actively participating in your child’s education. It was wonderful to see parents coming in for conferences this past month. It is important that your child sees you proactive and involved in their education. First trimester wraps up this month, and we truly appreciate your support and look forward to working closely with you this year. Our staff is committed to all of our students’ success and we appreciate your continued assistance.
We would like to thank parents and community members for supporting our PTO through our annual fundraiser. Because of you, we were able to raise over $6000. As you will read, we also have other donors who we are thankful for their generous and kind contributions to GW.
I wish all of our students and families a joyous Thanksgiving this year. Enjoy the time off with your family. Please don’t forget students return back from the break on November 26th.
Have a great month!

Mrs. Savannah Ashworth, 5th Grade
Mrs. Ashworth’s 5th grade class has been learning a variety of new skills this month! We have become familiar with using Google Classroom to access assignments and have been utilizing it to work on our writing skills. In reading, we have been focusing on biographies. After doing research, students will be writing a biography on a person of their choice. This will be the first five paragraph essay our class has written this year.
Students should be bringing home a “Universe in a Box” from science. Please ask them to use it to explain why the stars change with the seasons.
Mrs. Diane Berner, Extended Learning
Students at George Washington Elementary are learning to code thanks to support from the Governor's STEM Advisory Council. A Scale Up award brought a STEM In Action unit called Coding Mouse to the classroom for some hands-on learning. Students wrote a code, or set of instructions, for the robot mouse to find the x. Students will now design a maze and code the mouse to navigate it's way to safety. Other coding opportunities available to all students are the Coding Club, held on Thursdays at 4:00 pm at the Keokuk Public Library and the free online coding content through hourofcode.com and code.org. Software engineers are in high demand.
