Important Attendance Update!
Thank you for your commitment to your child’s education and for reading this important message! The attendance record of all public school students is evaluated yearly as part of the Georgia College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI). Once students accumulate six absences (excused or unexcused), our school’s overall attendance record is negatively impacted. This correlates with research from the Georgia Department of Education, which indicates that missing more than five days of school each year begins to impact student academic performance and starts shaping our children’s attitudes about school. Students should attend school every day, arrive on time and remain at school for the entire day unless there is a contagious illness or serious reason for being absent. Students can enter the building at 7:45 for breakfast and to begin learning right away. Students are counted tardy as of 8:15. Arriving late does not make for a stress-free relaxed beginning of the day. They also miss the morning announcements. Children who ride the bus always arrive before 8:00. Children in the Early Intervention Program or Response to Intervention do best when they arrive at those classes by 8:00. Please attempt to make appointments after school hours and avoid taking off the whole day for check-ups. Parents should be sure to get an excuse note. Coming into school before 11:30 or not checking out until after that time keeps your child from being counted absent for the day. If your child has a chronic medical condition, document this with the school if you have not already done so. Keep in mind that taking additional days off around student holidays can add up to many absences over the course of the year, especially if your child also becomes ill at some point. If your child is out, send in a note or email your child’s teacher to explain the absence. If your child is out sick more than 2 days, please consider going to the doctor and getting a note. Take a moment to review your child’s absences and tardies on the parent portal to be sure it is accurate. If you have questions concerning your child’s attendance or if there is a problem that the school can help resolve, contact the counselor, Dawn Garner, at dawn_garner@gwinnett.k12.ga.us. We appreciate your involvement and support!
