St. Louis Catholic High School
October 4, 2018
Happy Homecoming Week! It is an exciting time to be a Saint! This week allows us an opportunity to reflect upon our wonderful history and our bright future. And, like any other school or institution, we face our challenges. As you know, we had an expanded police presence on our campus last Thursday. It is important to note, once again, that at no point were your children in any danger. Yet, after listening to the concerns expressed by some of you, we acknowledge we could have communicated that to you in a more timely manner. Please know we have heard you, and we are currently updating our communications protocol.
Parent and community feedback is vital, and something we are always seeking. With that in mind, I am excited to invite you to attend our Saints Coffee Talks, the first of which will occur here at school next Friday, Oct. 12, at 8 a.m. These talks will serve as an opportunity for you to voice your opinion and give us valuable feedback as we chart the future of St. Louis Catholic High School. I look forward to seeing you there.

Homecoming Week Wraps Up
St. Louis Catholic/St. Charles/Landry Memorial alumni and their families are invited to a Homecoming Tailgate at Cougar Stadium tomorrow - Friday, Oct. 5, starting at 4 p.m. The Saints then take on Iowa at 7 p.m. The 2018 Homecoming Queen will be revealed at halftime.
Thank you to all who participated in our Homecoming Parade and pep rally on Wednesday! Our students and alumni had a blast yet again riding through the streets and celebrating with our Saints community.
Front Office Announcements
- Walnut Grove will be closed to all Homecoming pictures due to a private event.
- School is closed for students on Monday, Oct. 8 due to a faculty in-service.
- We are still having a lot of lunches being dropped off in the front office. Please take care of your lunch before school.
Counseling Team Updates: PSAT Testing Wednesday, Oct. 10
All students in grades 9, 10 and 11 will take the PSAT on Wednesday. Dismissal will be at noon. Calculators are allowed on part of the test, and students are encouraged to bring a graphing calculator to school IF you already own one. The test is able to be completed without a calculator so please don’t purchase one just for this day.
For the vast majority of our students, this will be their first experience with collegiate style testing, so expect your student to come home mentally exhausted. During testing, cell phones will be powered off and stored on the teachers' desks. Smart watches are prohibited in the testing rooms so students should leave those at home as well along with their backpacks.
We are excited about the reports we can get from this test, including a report called AP Potential that will help us better guide students as they decide on course registration for the next school year. Scores will be ready in December, and we look forward to sharing the results.
*NOTE: Seniors will have a day of reflection in Krajicek Gym during the testing time.

Donate to the Library
Landry Library Book Drive: More students have been checking out books thanks to the English Department incorporating some Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) time into classes. We are thrilled to see the students rediscover their joy of reading. So, clean out your bookshelves to help provide books for our teenagers! We will gladly accept monetary donations as well. During Banned Books Week last week, Ms. Fontenot's senior classes participated in a OneNote digital breakout in the library.
They worked in groups to escape censorship and learn about books that have been challenged.
Then they chose a challenged author or book they love and sent a message through Twitter or Flipgrid about it.
Faculty Spotlight: Choir Director Colette Tanner
Meet Saints Choir Director Colette Tanner, a 1989 graduate of St. Louis Catholic:
1. Hometown? Lake Charles, although I have also lived in Colorado & Jennings, LA
2. How many years teaching? This is my 23rd year teaching, my 19th year in the Diocese of Lake Charles.
3. Favorite quote? This is a very hard question!
(Spiritual Quote) St. Hildegard: "The feather flew, not because of anything in itself, but because the air bore it along. Thus am I ‘a feather on the breath of God'.”
(Scriptural Quote) Philippians 4:7: "Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
(Philosophical Quote) Plato: “The soul takes flight to the world that is invisible but there arriving she is sure of bliss and forever dwells in paradise.”
4. Favorite food? Mexican or Oriental
5. Best moment at St. Louis Catholic so far? As a teacher, hearing my students sing so beautifully at the Diocesan Jubilarian Mass.
6. What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend? I would LOVE to say climbing waterfalls...but usually cleaning my house, spending as much time as possible with my boys, and singing at church.
