Carnival Time is Here! Advance Tickets & Volunteer Opportunities Available

Don't let the weather scare you off! This year's carnival will be held inside the school. One of our most fun events of the year, the Claxton Fall Carnival and Fundraiser, is tomorrow, Friday, Oct 26, from 5:30-8:30pm at Claxton. In anticipation of this festive event , Friday (tomorrow) will be "Wacky Hair Day" at school, so send your child to school with their craziest hair (or just some good bed-head!).

VOLUNTEERS -We are still in need of volunteers, especially for Kinder and 3rd grade carnival games but for other roles as well! Shifts are short so that we can all have time to enjoy the carnival with our families! If you're able to help, please sign up at

TICKETS - You can buy tickets in advance this year (pick up at "will-call" table at the carnival)! Use the MySchoolAnywhere App/Website (login and go to Store). If not registered go to: Financial assistance is available; please contact or call 350-6503 for more details about financial assistance.

Halloween Book Character Costume Day

Halloween is fast approaching! Students are invited to join in the Halloween fun while celebrating a love of reading at the same time. All students are invited to come to school dressed up as their favorite book character on Wednesday October 31st. We look forward to seeing their costumes and to a school filled with characters from our very favorite books!

Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda

Our Kinder, 1st and 2nd grades have been focusing on the work of the amazing Mexican-American author/illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh recently during their specialist time in the Media Center. Many of his books celebrate the folklore, history and cultural events of Mexico. As a culminating activity, these classes have made a Dia de los Muertos ofrenda that has been on display in the rotunda outside of the Media Center. It is a wonderful way to honor the lives of our deceased loved ones while exploring a beautiful cultural celebration that is a tradition in Mexico. The ofrenda will also be featured during the Fall Carnival on Fri, Oct 26th and will return to the 1st floor rotunda next week. Families are invited to add a copy of a photo (one that doesn't need to be returned) of a loved one or a beloved pet that has passed away. Photos can be brought in and placed on the altar during the Fall Carnival or they can be sent into school with your child. To learn more about Dia de Los Muertos, please see the information below.

Leader in Me Habit for October -- Habit #1: Be Proactive!

Be Proactive means to take responsibility for your choices and behaviors. Habit 1 is the key to all of the other habits; that’s why it comes first. Be Proactive says, “I am in charge of my own life. I am responsible for whether I am happy or sad. I can choose how I react to other people or situations. I am in the driver’s seat.” Young children can easily learn to understand that different choices yield different results. The goal is to teach them to think about those results before they decide what to do. Discussions can focus on taking care of themselves, taking care of their things, reacting or not reacting to others’ behavior, planning ahead, and thinking about what the right thing to do is. With your child, think of ways to Be Proactive at home.

We'll be focusing on the habits 1-by-1 in the Buzz but if you'd like to download the complete Parent Guide for Leader in Me, the Spanish and English guides are available here--

The Story Pirates Are Coming!!!

The Story Pirates are coming to Claxton! The Story Pirates is a self-proclaimed “kid-centric media company and leading arts education advocate” whose actors travel the country to perform at schools. The Story Pirates also put on an acclaimed children’s podcast series where they turn kids’ original stories into “wild sketch comedy musicals”.

Thanks to our own local bookseller, Malaprops Bookstore and Cafe, our students will be treated to a live performance by this traveling two-person troupe on Tuesday November 6th at 9 am. What’s even more exciting is that their theatrical performance will be based on the popular Mr. Lemoncello’s Library chapter book series by Chris Grabenstein! Much of the show will be improvised based on suggestions and ideas from kids in the audience and will include a series of interactive games and challenges.

Claxton students are invited to purchase paperback copies of the wonderful Mr. Lemoncello’s book series by visiting this link: Here you can order copies of:

Book One: Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library

Book Two: Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics

Book Three: Mr. Lemoncello’s Great Library Race

A representative from Malaprops will be here at school the day of the performance to give out the books our students purchase. On top of helping bring this wonderful troupe to Claxton, Malaprops is graciously donating 20% of the total sales of the books back to the Claxton Elementary School media center! We thank Malaprops for thinking WIN-WIN-WIN: promoting reading, fundraising for our media center and offering an amazing presentation opportunity for our students!

Supper with the Super

Join Dr. Patterson, Superintendent of Asheville City Schools, for Supper with the Super, held at Claxton, on Thursday, November 8th from 5:30-6:30 PM. One of Dr. Patterson’s top priorities is meeting with parents and listening to as many students, staff and stakeholders as possible. Come discuss the latest topics impacting Asheville City Schools and share your ideas to support academic success for all students. All are welcome to attend so save the date!

Thanks-for-Reading Lunch Invitation & Volunteer Opportunity

On Wed, November 14, Claxton will be hosting our annual Thanks-for-Reading Lunch. This event includes a Thanksgiving lunch and opportunity to visit your child's classroom to learn about their reading activities this year. Invitations and RSVP information were sent home in this week's Thursday folders.

We also have two volunteer opportunities on this date--

1) We're looking for volunteers to staff our sign in tables in Claxton's lobby for hour-long slots between 10am and 1pm. Volunteers will help parents sign in, hand out name tags and help families find their way to students' classrooms.

2) Claxton will be hosting a one-day book fair with Firestorm Bookstore during school hours on Nov 14. Firestorm Bookstore will have staff present, but we're also looking for a few volunteers to help us in having a successful book fair!

Claxton Crafty -- Save the Date and Call for Vendors and Musicians

Mark your calendars for Sat Nov 10 for the Claxton Crafty at the Salvage Station from 10am-5pm! We invite vendors and musicians to join in this great event. Proceeds from booth rental fees go directly to support Claxton Elementary School (and vendors keep 100% of their own sales). We're planning to host the event outside but our backup plan in case of rain or cold is to use the inside space at Salvage Station. The link to the application is below. Please complete the application and we'll be in touch with further details and vendor booth rental payment information. We are planning on having live music, again provided by talented members of our Claxton family and other community members. Mr. Butler, our music teacher, is helping to coordinate this. If you know anyone else (adult, child, professional, or novice) who may be interested in performing, please let us know. Thank you for your interest!

For more information, please contact Tricia Johnson at or 828-231-4078.

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer!

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.

All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

The full ACS Volunteer Training Schedule for 2018-2019 is linked here. Dates coming soon include--

Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at 12:00 PM

Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at 12:00 PM
