Message to Students: Why You Should Keep Working to Improving Your 4th Quarter Grades
The Virtual Learning Structure is Set-up to Provide You with Opportunities to IMPROVE your Grades!
- Teachers will be continuing to provide work and assist you in your learning throughout the fourth quarter. Our hope is that you see this as an opportunity to work with teachers on homework assignments that have been chunked into manageable lessons to continue to improve your grades. This is the perfect opportunity for you to raise your grades from the third quarter! Please do not stop working on improving your grades!
Your GPA Does Matter!
- Other key factors that might encourage you to continue working toward better grades in all of your classes are the grade/GPA incentives that are available to you next year based on your GPA this year.
- Your GPA does factor into your Academic Letter status for next fall, and your cumulative GPA will still be used for NHS acceptance and the A+ scholarship.
- As you look to your course selection for next year, there are many courses in the course catalog that require a prerequisite grade or prerequisite GPA.
- These incentives are all reasons to continue working to improve your quarter grades, semester grade, and cumulative GPA.
Your Integrity and Girt Does Matter!
- At the end of your senior year, you will be asking many of your teachers for letters of recommendation for scholarships to continue your post-high school education. Many of these scholarship recommendations ask for the student's skills and abilities like tenacity, grit, work ethic, etc. These factors may not weigh into your decision at this time, but I don't want you to sell yourself short. I know you can work to raise your third quarter grades, and I know you can finish the quarter strong in all of your classes, even those with grades that you feel are adequate at this time!
Important Grading Reminders
- Since all students are now aware of the "Hold Harmless" policy, please make sure that the 4th quarter grades correctly reflects the students work for 4th quarter.
- We will override 4th quarter grades/2nd semester grades at the end of 4th quarter if the student's 3rd quarter grade is higher than the student's 4th quarter grade.
- Please replace all EXMP grades with ZEROES at this time unless the assignment/student falls into one of the following categories:
- The student is an IEP student and you do not intend for the student to submit the assignment because you cannot provide adequate accommodations according to the student's IEP; therefore, the student is exempt from the assignment, and you do not intend to calculate that assignment into the student's grade. I strongly suggest you communicate with the IEP student's case manager/resource teacher before using EXPT instead of a zero!
- The student is a paper packet student who has not had adequate time to return the paper materials to you. If the student has had one week or more to turn in the materials, please use a zero for mid-terms. You can always go back and change that score if the student turns in the material at a later date.
- You are working one-on-one with a student and have made individual accommodations regarding the assignment/work load, and you have permanently exempted the student from the assignment.
Important Flexible Learning Reminders
NOW is the time for MERCY and GRACE---for both your students and yourself!
2) Assignments should be MANAGEABLE, MINIMAL, and MEANINGFUL for students and parents!
2) Avoid introducing large chunks of new concepts! (Remember, many students do not have wifi at all or consistent connectivity! This makes learning new concepts harder for these students.)
3) Avoid quizzes or assessments over large chunks of material! (If you choose to give small quizzes or assessments, consider allowing struggling students to retake these quizzes and assessments as needed.)
4) Daily work may not exceed 30 minutes per course!
5) Grade for effort and/or completion as necessary!
6) Use Exempt as necessary for students with limited/no WiFi or for students who need modified work.
(The only exceptions for the above criteria are Dual Credit courses.)
General Video Conferencing Guidelines for Teachers
End-of-Year PDP: Due Friday, May 1st
Hotspot Update
- Hotspots have arrived (CHS=20; CMS=15)!
- A process is in place for distribution based on need and per family (between CMS and CHS).
- Hotspots will have limited monthly data; therefore, filters have been installed by Melissa Young and Dr. Watkins.
- Mrs. Prather has coded hotspots through Library Media accounts.
- Dr. Watkins and Mrs. Prather have delivered hotspots! If you know of a student who still needs one, please let Dr. Watkins or Mrs. Prather know ASAP!
- Click here for more information on Zito Media WiFi for Low Income Students.
A+ Updates
- 2020 Seniors still have to have 95% cumulative attendance. Students' cumulative attendance will calculated by using their actual attendance through Monday, March 16th and will be given 100% attendance for March 17th through May 8th.
- 2020 Seniors will not have to have a qualifying EOC Algebra score or ACT/GPA combination.
- 2020 Seniors will have to have a 2.5 cumulative GPA may qualify at the end of either the fall or spring semester of their senior year.
- 2020 Seniors currently completing their tutoring hours will only need 25 of the 50 required hours.
Dr. Watkins has contacted each senior regarding these changes in qualifications!
