Policy Update
What you need to know
On October 10, 2018 the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published the proposed Public Charge rule that could have a significant negative impact on the immigrant community we all serve.
The proposed rule would affect the following groups, which has not changed:
- Deny entry to legal permanent residents who have been out of the county for more than 180 days and are seeking re-entry into the U.S
- Deny a green card (lawful permanent resident status) to immigrants looking to change their status
These two groups would be subject to the public charge rule if they have used or are using benefits such as; some affordable housing programs, Medi-Cal and CalFresh (formerly food stamps). The groups of people subject to public charge would not change, but rather the types of programs subject to the rule would be expanded.
Under federal law, the government is required to read and respond to every comment before issuing a final rule. That's why we ask you to submit yours now and share how this rule would affect your community and those you serve.

Volunteer Opportunity!
Spanish-speaking volunteers needed for legal casework
Asian Law Alliance is a non-profit legal services organization that is based in Santa Clara County, they are looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers to assist clients with different services. They have flexible hours and can work with your schedule
- Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially needed to help represent clients in asylum, removal defense, and other complex immigration cases.
- Volunteers will help screen clients during consultations, provide translations for interviews and case work, and assist some clients in filling out legal forms.

The mission of the FASD Ambassador Program is to provide paid opportunities to student leaders who will assist Evergreen Valley College students, High School Partners and Community Organizations with Financial Aid Awareness and Student Development through Student Engagement, to enhance Student Success.
The program will bring together a diverse group of students who have a passion for helping others navigate their way through the financial aid process, while promoting community and campus involvement to support retention and completion.
We are excited to offer this opportunity to our future leaders in education and community. We will be actively recruiting full-time students who have a passion for this work all month long. Please share this opportunity with your students.

The T&I program is a 3-semester program and can be taken in conjunction with a planned Transfer program or another Career Education (CE) program, such as Paralegal, Medical Assisting, etc.
The EVC T&I Program is a path towards becoming a Certified Medical, Legal, Educational or Community Translator/Interpreter. In addition to excellent training during Evening/Saturday courses, EVC offers counseling/career coaching, local internship opportunities, and state exam preparation.
Translation and Interpretation is a great option if you have a love and facility for languages.

The Teen Volunteer Internship Program offers students in grades 9 through 12 the opportunity to go behind the scenes of our Museum and its exhibitions.
Teen Engagement Council (TEC)
This program is geared towards previous Teen Interns or Volunteers that are looking for ways to stay engaged with the Museum and build on their previous experiences.

Strong preference will be given to applicants who plan to concentrate their studies in one of the following areas (or one similar): Engineering, Computer Science, Technology or Math.

Latinos in Technology Scholarship
This scholarships is for Latino(a) students who have a declared major in a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-related field. Up to $30,000 (paid over three years, provided renewal eligibility requirements are met).
This program will give up to 100 Latino students the support they need to graduate from college. Additionally, scholarship recipients will be considered for summer internships with sponsoring corporate investors.
In addition to the application, you'll be required to submit four types
of documents to be considered for the Latinos in Technology Scholarship
