How Can Crosby Scholars Impact Iredell County?
December 3 Academy Included Info Meetings for Parents
Dr. Jane Riley, Counselor at Crossroads Early College of Arts and Sciences, spoke to the group about the programs housed at Statesville High School, Mitchell Community College (CCTL), and the new program for 2017-18 to be housed at North Iredell High School and known as the Early College for Agriculture and Science. All of these programs use the same application and have the same deadline: January 31, 2017.
The second speaker, Sharon Ellis, from Mitchell Community College, spoke about the Career and College Promise Program (CCP). This is a program for juniors and seniors where they remain at their home high school, and can also take courses from MCC. Our First Senior Class!
As a part of the process to support them, we need people who are willing to be trained as advisors to work individually with senior students. The time commitment can be as little as a couple of hours per month, or much more if your schedule allows and you have the desire to get more involved. For more information or to let us know you are interested, send an e-mail to info@crosbyscholarsiredell.org with a note that you might like to be a senior advisor.
Crosby Scholars Program Celebrates 25 Years
Since the program began in 1993:
- Prepared more than 30,000 students for higher education
- Enrolled 98% of high school senior participants in a four or two year college immediately after graduation
- Awarded more than $5.5 million dollars in Last Dollar Grants*
- Leveraged more than $50 million dollars in financial support**
*Last Dollar Grants are need-based grants awarded to program graduates and renewable each year of college if enrollment and gpa criteria are met. Money is raised locally for these grants.
**For each grant awarded, the program has helped Scholars find aid valued at ten times the amount from other sources.
In 2016-17, the program enrolled more than 10,000 Forsyth County students in a single school year for the first time in the program's history.
- Graduated 827 senior Crosby Scholars
- Graduates enrolled in 131 colleges and universities throughout North Carolina and across the nation (and internationally)
- 25% of graduates were first generation college students
- 10 Crosby Scholars graduated as valedictorian
- 33% were active participants in Crosby Scholars since joining the program in the sixth grade
- The three most popular college choices in 2016 were UNC-Chapel Hill, Appalachian State University and UNC-Greensboro
