November 2019 Edition

Dr. Steve Matthews

We need your input...

As many of you are aware, there is an abundance of research supporting later school start times for middle and high school students. This research also points to the overall student mental health and well-being of the students, which ultimately is a focus of our district goals.

To address this, the District formed a Bell Time Committee to research and explore what adjustments were needed to more closely align our start times with the research. The committee presented their recommendation to the Board of Education, at the November 21 Board meeting.

Here’s the “Why” behind this change:

1. https://www.cdc.gov/features/school-start-times/index.html

2. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/stumbling-towards-diversity/201910/school-start-times-and-teens-sleep-needs

The District is sharing a Google Form with you, so you can provide anonymous
feedback that will be shared with the committee and central administration.

THANKS AND SHOUT OUTS

Fun Fact...

Did you know: The guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier takes 21 steps and pauses for 21 seconds after his about face to begin his return walk. This is because the 21 reflects the twenty-one gun salute, the highest honor given to any military or foreign dignitary.

NOVI HAPPENINGS IN NOVEMBER

November was packed with all kinds of exciting events that were happening throughout our Novi Community School District. Here are just a couple things to peek your interest. Okay, so there are more than just a couple, but they are all good reads.
