Students Excel at Nationals

Big picture

Congratulations to the Daniel Wright students who competed this month in the International Academic Competition in history, geography and other areas of academia in Arlington, Virginia. The students qualified for nationals after two rounds of qualifications, earning them a top spot in the national competition!

Students qualified based on scores from the 2020-2021 school year. Shreyan Sahoo (7) placed sixth in US History Bee finals competition. Agastya Choudhary, former DW student, made it to the semi finals round in both the US Science and History Bee competitions. Gavin Plautz (8), Yana Malpani (8) Val Vihrov (8) Evan Polen (8) Aarav Purwar (8) Ethan Wang (7) and Joseph Neela (7) also competed in the national competition.

“I was so impressed with the success of our team! They worked hard in the midst of a pandemic to get to this level of competition. No matter how they placed in the end, they still ranked top in the nation and impressed us all with their knowledge and successes. We are already looking ahead to this next year and bringing the team back together in June 2022 for another round of national competition” said Coach Kristine Rickert.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

The idea for Hispanic Heritage Month began as a way to promote the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic-Americans — specifically, those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Communities mark the achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans with festivals and educational activities.

The 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month theme invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and to reflect on how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto our resilience and hope. It also encourages us to reflect on all the contributions Hispanics have made in the past and will continue to make in the future.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from Sept.15 to Oct. 15. It is a time to appreciate and celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories, and diversity of the American Latino community.

Daniel Wright invites families to read some of the literature about the culture. To view pictures of the students, please visit our Facebook page or go to our Google Doc folder.
