What's Up in October

Julie Murphy visits SHS Book Club

We were so thankful to have Julie Murphy Skype with us for almost an hour. She answered many questions from our book club members and then offered up some secrets from her upcoming novel, Ramona Drowning. We were especially glad to hear her talk about her writing inspiration, her process for writing, and how her support system helps her manage such a task. Our book club read her book Dumplin' and would recommend it to everyone.

Dell Venue Check Out Program

What an exciting time it is in our technology arena. Students were able to sign up for a Dell Venue 11 tablet to take home and use for their homework and jobs. 64 Venues went out in two weeks. A big thanks to Michael Tomberlin for helping us to expedite this program. Students received a Windows 8 Touch screen tablet, a new case, charger, & active stylus. What a great package!

Coins for Coats

We surpassed our goal of collecting $218 and gave $361 instead. What a generous group of souls we have at SHS. A family will be provided with a warm coat this winter and we will have a warm spot in our hearts for helping others in need.

Research Projects

Mr. Barba's class is researching a select group of topics on our Research Resources. Our databases can be translated into approximately 12 different languages.

The Millionaire's Club Kicks Off!

Please encourage students to join the Millionaire's Club. We are trying to read a million words this year. Students can register in the library and then start earning prizes! Just sign up with Mrs. Hawkins, read a book, answer some questions about the book then enter a raffle to earn $20.00 gift cards. Reading practice is vital to developing fluency and comprehension. It's a win-win.

Coding Club & 'Appy Club on iPads

The iPads are being used in several different ways. We have had students experiment with coding and playing competitive apps. We've had students doing research and reading. Some students prefer the portability and the touch screens for their coursework. Let me know if you would like to bring your class in or have me visit your class with the iPads.

October Statistics

Take a look at our statistics for the month of October. With the help from some friends we are able to stay open for both lunches on Monday through Wednesday.
