Reading List in Celebration of Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Texans still faced slavery due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the Executive Order. With the surrender of General Lee in April 1865 and Major General Gordon Granger’s regiment on June 19, 1865, the enslaved were now free.
