Fact Families is the big one that students will need to master by the end of the 3rd six weeks. I will introduce it this week. I will eventually give the students 3 numbers and they will be able to create a fact family. Example: 3, 2, 5
3+2=5
2+3=5
5-2=3
5-3=2
We will start practicing with 2 blue cubes and 3 green cubes and snap them together two ways. For subtraction we will start with them all together and remove one color, then the other. We will talk about how you can flip flop the addition, but for subtraction, you must start with the biggest number.
Students will also need to identify a penny, nickel, dime and quarter and their values by the end of the 3rd six weeks. We have been working on this during calendar, but it is always good to review at home as well. Students will need to describe the relationships between coins such as 1 dime= 10 pennies and a nickel has more value than a penny.
